multichannel amps suck. They are overpriced and underperforming.

JL stuff is nice, but if you are just looking for a little extra sound I don't know if I would spend that much money. What kind of car are we talking about?

Mazda3 sedan....

I may be able to get some infinity amps/subs at 60-70% off retail, should i go that route?

I basically just want something with more defintion that i get with the stock system, definately more low end, but like i said, i only want to hear it in my car, not down the block The stock system lacks color.

why wouldnt you buy in infinity setup if you can get that kind of deal?

And if you want to do it right, pick up a nice 4 channel amp for you highs and a monoblock amp for your sub(s). You will spend less and get more performance.

never. The last and only good one I saw was the Orion HCCA model. That was a long time ago.

infinity speakers sound harsh when amped.........reference series sound pretty good off the headunit power........get speakers based on what type of sound you like......don't be stuck to certain brands........MB Quart, Boston Acoustic, CDT, JL, Infinity, JBL, Crystal......tons of companies make good products...pick out what suits your ears.......
I like metal tweeters and bright sound...so i'm more into MB Quart, Focal, and Diamond speakers.........

if you want some good speakers, go check out the Polk DB series. They are a mid priced speaker that kicks any other speaker's ass. You don't have to amp them, but they scream when you do.

Boston Acoustics are great....can't go wrong with them..........
Rudeguy's suggestion ...Polk DB series...I've heard those and they're great also.......but you should always amp speakers to get the most out of them......
BTW if you can get the Infinity Reference line of amps discounted.....go for it.
What kind of sound are you looking for?

If we're talking about subs then I can assure you Kicker is the BEST bang for your hard-earned buck. Owned 3 different models and they all pound low while staying crisp with great sound quality. Right now I have just one square 12" Solobaric L7 in a little ass ported box taking 700+ watts RMS and thats all I'll ever need for perfect bass with no overkill.

My friend used to have 3 10" JL subs in his trunk and I have never heard any subs hit as tight as his did. He had them powered with zapco amps.

Are you looking for quality or do you need to feel accepted by buying what everyone else has? If the former, check out Adire Audio.

I have JL audio setup and its crisp and not overpowering. I listen to mostly hip hop, classical, and some rock. I have jl xr components up front, xr coaxils out back, 3 w7s out back (personally all you need is one), 500/1 mono for my subs, 300/4 for my components and coaxiils. But personally i really like the MB quart components they are really crisp and clear.

Adire series, especially the Brahma arn't exactly "best bang for the buck" though, some of the Adire prices I've seen have been steep. Kicker isn't a something to get just to feel accepted either, they're known for quality low frequency reproduction and I can atest for that x3 and do qualify as "bang for the buck" subs.

Adire Audio Shiva 12" - 125 shipped.
OR
Image Dynamics ID12 - Can be found refurbished and authorized on cardomain.com for cheap. Excellent little driver. I have its big brother - The IDmax 12.
400 watt amp at 4 ohms - 200-300
Decent set of components or coaxials - 100-200
2 or 4 channel amp - varies a lot.

If you want to stick with one brand, a newer company with great service: www.edesignaudio.com

Grab a 13kv.2, Nine.2 amplifier, eDi 6000 component set, and a Nine.4 amp for a complete system.

Lots of options out there. I really don't like brick and mortar car audio shops, they're worse than brick and mortar computer shops: Hugely overpriced, can be very shady trying to make commision. As far as the install, all shops will do a decent job, it'll prolly cost ya though.

The definately sounded good, but are they worth the money over Infinity, Alpine, Kicker, etc?

I dont need bone shattering bass, i'm just unimpressed with the new stock system i have and want to add some bass for now (single 10" or 12") and eventually some new speakers...

I also saw they have a 6 channel JL Audio amp, would that suit me well?

They used to be the best bang for the buck. Not sure what it's like today. I think the end of the W6 line should have been the end of JL though! What were they thinking!?!?!?!?!?!

JL subs are great, the amps I don't know anything about but I've been told they are good.

my cousin had a 10" W6 in his car a year or 2 ago... thing was so sweet... That's all you need, a single 10 in a sealed box.. perfect punchy bass, not overpowering unless you want it to be! clean clean clean sound from that baby.

Yet another JL owner here! I have a 12" W3v2 in a custom sealed box. Most people think I am running at least 2 12"s in my trunk! It seriously hits that hard and produces that much sound. It's powered by an Alpine M501 550W@2ohm amp and delivers outstanding performance.

Personally, I love quality music that is precise, bust most of all, clear without distortion. I've had my stereo cranked pretty loud (about 25 on my Alpine deck with all gains at 0) and it handled it well.

The rest of my stereo is composed of Boston Acoustic coaxials to preserve the 'stock look' on the interior (minus the head unit) and Alpine F540 80Wx4@4ohm for the front doors and rear dash. FX3s in the front, SL65s on the doors, and SL95s in the rear. Tsunami 2 farad cap!

Anyways, hell yeah! JL is worth the money if you've got it. I would have gone with a W7 or something better, but I got an uber-sweet deal on this W3. Either way, with JL, you can't go wrong.

That's a pretty broad generalization...

What if "performing" included only having to run one set of power wires and not having such a big footprint?

I'm a year or two out of the car audio scene but when I left, the good bang-for-the-buck brands were Adire and ED for subs and US Acoustics, Avionixx, and HiFonics for amps

I'm running a few US Acoustics USX series amps... I like em. Wanted bass but not a big hit in the pocketbook. The USX-2150 working on an old Cerwin Vega 12" in a ported box puts out a fair amt of bump. If that speaker ever blows I was thinking about a Shiva to replace it.
