Take a look at what the guys from OverClockers.ru managed to achieve with AMD Duron at 2.30GHz using system based on ABIT NF7 (revision 2.0), 512MB of PC3500 memory, ATI RADEON 9700 PRO and Thermaltake Volvcano 7 cooler.

Or a 1700 for around $40 and still has a respectable cache that does influence performance in many instances. I still don't regret my 2500 though.

Hopefully they come out with a few more that can reach higher... I can see it now, "NEW" Duron 1.9Ghz @ 2.8Ghz....

But does the speed REALLY compensate for the lack of cache? Maybe we can get Anand to grab a few and put it through its paces... NFS4?

These will be a lot less than that when they hit the market running. I dunno if we will see them in the US though. Probably.

or you can get a 59 dollar 1800+ full tbred b with a ecs motherboard and hit 2.4on air, and 2.5 with a better cooler/fan. combos at frys are always on sale. i didn't know they still made durons.

Quake III Arena, demo-four, 1024x768

AMD Duron 1.60GHz (266MHz FSB)
231.4

AMD Duron 2.30GHz (400MHz FSB)
247.4

AMD Athlon XP 1.60GHz
324.2

thats kinda sad.

pretty soon the 1.45v default tbreds will hit the market and those oc to 1.6+

Why not just get an Athlon XP1700 for $42 for the same performance.

Because almost everyone is getting a TBred A from NewEgg now, and it's $47 last time I checked.

thats why you buy from frys easy return, you don't even have to open it the retail packaging lets you see the chip without opening it and the oem comes in a seehtrough package too. last couple combos for 1800+ everyone got tbred b

Plain and simple that is a neutered 2.3ghz with the lack of cache which in many apps it does mean shite.....Why waste the cash on a 2.3ghz that may not be worth more then 2-2.1ghz of say a tbred A or B???? It is like INtel's ridiculous celreon that when it runs 3ghz is still only equal to a p4 at 2.0ghz...

That's exactly what it is I believe...thats the only difference now right??

I'm not 100% sure what they are doing carrying on the Duron, the lower end Athlon XP (Tbred-B's) make much better value chips...I guess it's marketing again.

The Duron is exactly a cache-cut TbredB, hence the name AppleBred. As odd as a Duron sounds though in these days of cheap XP's, it's not meant to be a cheap chip, it's meant to be an ultra-cheap chip for ultra-cheap machines in 2nd/3rd world countries, where 5 dollars makes a huge difference. Remember, the cheapest Duron is only going for $30 or so, something the XP can't even touch.

Thats Appalbred (Appaloosa/TBred), and as stated, this is not for USA but for 'Emerging Markets', which means they don't have FRY's etc with cheap chips. I don't really understand the financial logic behind AMDs decision. This is a .13 micron process and the profit margins on such a low price chip must be really low, course maybe they are making a million chips !!

Intel has about 90% of the Chinese market. A light should go off in your head about now.
