There is basically no support for OSX from the GPS industry. That's why dual booting is so nice. I have OSX for everything except GPS right now. I tested the MS Street and Trips GPS and it works great in WinXP on a Macbook.

Just making a point here, comparing a Dell to an Apple laptop and saying the Dell is better because it's a couple hundred dollars cheaper is just dumb. Also, saying OS X isn't good is pretty rediculous. Even if you don't like it, it's still a very good operating system that is rock solid. Just because it can't play every new game that comes out does not make it bad. I've worked on PC's since the days of MS-DOS and Windows 3.11 and have been a hardcore PC user ever since. I'm a Windows technician for my local PC repair shop and know my way around very well. Until only recently I couldn't stand anything Mac, until I tried one. I ended up selling my Athlon X2 system and bought a G5 and have never looked back. I also have a MacBook Pro that has Windows installed on it for those rare occasions that I need it.

You think people are going to read your post and say "he's right my Mac is stupid I should have saved $300 and bought a Dell"? That's about as likely as you reading my post and buying a Mac.

Funny you say that because I just converted my friend from an iMac with OSX to a rig a built him with windows 2000, he is much happier with the PC. One reason he hated the mac was because it was very SLOW and unreliable...

I've seen that but it's not really all that great. I played with it in the past. You have to supply your own maps, which aren't cheap.

I much prefer something that works in realtime, like a normal in-car navigation system.

Well I know many, many people (including some very high-up IT security professionals) that would disagree with you. Make no mistake, I'm not saying the Apple computer is the greatest computer ever to be had, and there are much better machines - but for the price I believe it is one of the best. Do I believe it is better than Dell? Wholeheartedly. OS X is a great operating system, it just takes a little getting used to. I even bought my mom a Mac Mini. She has this uncanny ability to crash any computer you put in front of her. It's been almost a year and the thing has never even froze up on her. She couldn't be happier.

The $300 goes to higher build quality and support, better cosmetic design (IMO), and OS X.

I agree with what he said... My little sisters had a PC for about 3 years, every few months they would completely trash it, We bought 'em a Mac Mini and it has been problem free for over a year.

In that case, definately go with a Windows-based product. You can run it in Parallel's virtual machine or directly in Boot Camp. The people I know who use laptops as their in-car nav systems all use Windows anyway.

In my experience with IBM laptops, I absolutely love them and make dell look like garbage, I can easily see how it would make the macs look like crap by the way you describe things and what I've heard.

The laptop should never get hot or even remotely warm, if it does, the cooling system ISN'T doing it's job. On my T42, under full load at full speed, the only thing that is hot is the exhaust heat (ya know, where the heat is blown out from the fan), otherwise everything else on the laptop is about ambient temperature.

Wow, your friend must be extremely dim-witted if he managed to make OSX unreliable. I'm guessing that it's probably true if he is your friend, though.

For an operating system that is 'idiot proof' or at the very minimum geared towards idiots, I don't see how he could be at fault (implying he's an idiot as you're saying). There isn't spyware for macs, he has only a printer and iPod that hook into the computer and I highly doubt it's got any viruses so I don't see how he could be 'at fault'.

All I know and what I saw when I was at his house transferring files from the mac was that it look like an absolute pain to use, which in my experience it is a pain to use. The OS was very laggy and slow to load and performed tasks much slower than need be. And this is a computer that CAME WITH THE OS, I've seen Windows XP run faster on PII's then my friend's machine....

That's a pretty nice laptop. How fast does it run OS X? I'll bet it's nice to have the maker of the operating system control every aspect of the hardware running their software. I also love calling Pakistan whenever I need technicial support or customer service! Go Dell!

Just making a point here, comparing a Dell to an Apple laptop and saying the Dell is better because it's a couple hundred dollars cheaper is just dumb. Also, saying OS X isn't good is pretty rediculous. Even if you don't like it, it's still a very good operating system that is rock solid. Just because it can't play every new game that comes out does not make it bad. I've worked on PC's since the days of MS-DOS and Windows 3.11 and have been a hardcore PC user ever since. I'm a Windows technician for my local PC repair shop and know my way around very well. Until only recently I couldn't stand anything Mac, until I tried one. I ended up selling my Athlon X2 system and bought a G5 and have never looked back. I also have a MacBook Pro that has Windows installed on it for those rare occasions that I need it.

You think people are going to read your post and say "he's right my Mac is stupid I should have saved $300 and bought a Dell"? That's about as likely as you reading my post and buying a Mac.

Funny you say that because I just converted my friend from an iMac with OSX to a rig a built him with windows 2000, he is much happier with the PC. One reason he hated the mac was because it was very SLOW and unreliable...

Don't get me wrong, I despise apple products in some of the same ways as you do. However, talking down to the Apple laptops as inferior products simply proves you have no fvcking clue what your talking about. ASUStek, Quanta and possibly another manufacturer make all Apple laptops. Asus being - and a lot of people would agree - the best latop manufacturer out there. Who as far as I know, makes all of these newest MacBooks.

This is the same for everything apple "makes" since they don't make anything hardware wise - only have OEMs do it for them. Those OEMs are nearly always great OEM's in terms of quality, and always share components with a product that you would most likely rave about while talking down to apples even though its the same. By all means though, keep it up - pwnage of the year award is only a few more posts away

I never said that Apple was infallable. In fact I have made quite a few posts about 'issues' that I've had with OSX. You use horrible arguments and really should take a class on logic so that you'd be able to back up what you say with actual fact instead of incredibly biased conjecture. Calling people 'Apple Zombies,' 'drones,' and saying that they have a superiority complex is simply ridiculous. I own both Apple and PC hardware and nothing is perfect.

I'm sick of people on this and other forums bashing other people who say anything good about a particular company just because they have a personal bias against them. Learn to debate, not just slam blindly. OSX is powerful, you just have to know how to use it. Note that I'm not saying it is better.

Some people may blindly buy Apple hardware, but for crying out loud they have lower than a 5% marketshare, so certianly the great majority of people buying 'bad' hardware are not buying Apple machines, try $399 pcs from mom&pop stores that sell used hardware with illegal XP licenses. But, its easier to attack the big popular companies, so people jump on that bandwagon and do it.

Like I said in another thread a while back, if you are really bothered to such an extent over what people purchase, you really need to think about re-evaluating your personal position.

Yes because I remember the first asus computer I bought I thought of how awesome it was, oh wait... Designing a stable motherboard and designing a computer that isn't an electric blanket are two different accomplishments..
You keep saying that the apple laptops are of such high quality and that I have no clue as to what I'm talking about, now what about IBM, have you ever used an IBM laptop? If so, DO TELL! I wouldn't be surprised that you have since thats the only reply to this question with out looking like a fool. I've used tons of apple products, not a single one of which I've been impressed by.

Before I got my IBM T42, I was indifferent to IBM products, I did remember an IBM 600 series laptop that my dad had purchased that I strangely immensely liked but my encounter with it was cut short, only to never see or use it again. I didn't use an IBM computer until I got my T42, which I purchased solely on the advice of anandtech forum goers..

Out of all the laptops I've used which is quite a bit, (BTW if you're an IT guy who works on laptops, STFU, nobody cares, I've used a lot for a person who doesn't work in IT) I have to say the IBM laptops are absolutely Top notch, I've seen older T series in better condition than panasonic tough books, but that might not be saying much since they ARE put under vastly different conditions...

The only thing that is 'powerful' in OSX is it's 'powerful ability' to bring any decently equipped system to it's knees due to it being so damned bloated..
