Hello gentle folk, I've encountered a little odd issue and am curious about any suggestions you might have. I'll set the scene - computer is a few years old, GTX1080 FTW is one year old. 100% stable performance, computer sees about 30 hours/week of use, of which about 10 of those hours are spent gaming. Previous monitors include a 120hz 1080p screen (no G-Sync) and a 4K tv 60hz TV, all 100% stable.
New equipment - I installed a 240hz G-Sync monitor (Asus PG258Q) on Saturday which runs through a DisplayPort cable (previously all my monitors ran from DVI or HDMI). I ran into the first crash about eight hours later, the computer had been on the whole time and in-use for maybe five of those hours. Gaming for maybe three of those hours before the first crash.
Crash Symptoms - Monitor suddenly goes black, GPU fans spin up to 100%. I can still hear audio playing, I have to hit the reset button at this point.
When it happens - Crash usually happens during games but one time it crashed 30 seconds after the last crash when all I had opened was Chrome.
How often - Since I've discovered the issue, I've purposely been playing a lot to try to discover a pattern. I haven't found one yet. I played five matches of Overwatch last night fine, after the last match I went back to the menu screen and opened the stats screen only for the pc to crash. In the 24 hours since installing the monitor, it's crashed five or six times now.
Troubleshooting steps so far - Installed the latest NVidia drivers; set G-Sync to work in both Fullscreen and Windowed (still crashes).
Troubleshooting steps I could try - I could disable G-Sync, or back down from 240hz to 120hz, or plug in my old 120hz monitor. All these seem to defeat the purpose of purchasing this monitor though so I'm hesitant to take these steps yet. The video card is roughly a year old, never once had a problem with it before now. Never had a single crash relating to the nvidia drivers I was using. I could also look for drivers for the monitor, which seems wise now that I think of it however it's not something I have ever done for any monitor before.
I can't think of where else to go with this... could the 240hz be causing my video card to draw more energy to power the screen? I have a Corsair 550W PSU. But my 4k 60hz screen causes zero issues, which I would assume would be the equivalent if such a thing even exists.
I typically keep tons of Google Chrome tabs open at a time, like 30 tabs or so... some of which have videos on them. None of this behavior is new however, I have a year+ of rock solid stability with this computer and GPU and this many tabs open. I will start here though by closing all Chrome tabs and making sure no tabs have videos open within.
So that was a lot to take in, if you've read this far kudos and thanks. When the screen loses input and the gpu fans spin up to 100%, to me that indicates the display driver has crashed... does that sound about right? Event Viewer doesn't report anything except that the computer didn't shutdown properly last time.
Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome.
TL DR - New 240hz G-Sync Monitor, PC now crashes with a blank screen and GPU fans spin to 100%.
