I want a console for sports games.

MLB The Show has me leaning towards a PS4, but I'll mostly play NHL and Madden.

Today I bought a new 4K TV with HDR Pro.

Should I get :

1) PS4 Pro
2) PS4 Slim
3) Xbox One S

I'm leaning towards a Pro (as It will be my main gaming experience, my PC is secondary).

Is the upscaling to 4K by the Xbox One S going to be any better than the LG upscaling to 4k? If not, is the Pro worth the money over the slim for these 3 sports titles?

My smart TV does Netflix/Youtube in 4k and has spotify, so really I'd only be using the console for gaming.

4K Blu Rays isn't my thing either. I'm all about the streaming services these days.

Tell me what you think.

I would get whatever console has all the sports games you want. If PS4 has them all, do that one and get the pro... might as well go all out

I'd go pro too. Just because you may as well and I think the PS4 is the better gaming machine right now.

The Pro, of the devices listed, is the best option.

It's going to far less about gaming at 4K (you won't be) but smoother gaming at 1080p.

If you game on PC, there is no reason to get an XB1. Everything Microsoft publishes will be Play anywhere, meaning you can get it on PC, if you have Windows 10. That makes going PS4 much smarter, because you then get the exclusives from both first-party publishers.

If all you want is sports stuff, there is nothing the XB1 has over the PS4. PS4 is the only option for a real baseball experience, while the other pro sports leagues are all multi-platform.

The PS4 Pro will be a good jump up in performance over the current PS4 models. Games will all scale to 4k while rendering them internally at 2560x1440 with some games having HDR. RIght now there are no HDR games so I haven't been able to try out HDR gaming on my current PS4. I'd wait for Scorpio next year if you are looking at an Xbox as a secondary console only because that will again be a performance jump over the current Xbox model. The S just adds 4k scaling and HDR for games with no extra horsepower so I think the PS4 Pro will give the better experience right now.

OP did say console, but yeah I suppose it's an option. No ETA on when HDR gaming will come to PC though. I half expected a patch for Tomb Raider already because of the way Nvidia was talking it up. Not yet though. Consoles beat the PC to the punch on HDR.

This thread just goes to show you how the 4k marketing is duping the general public who doesn't really understand resolutions and 4k content. At least the OP get's that it's only scaling to 4k and it's not really 4k, but imagine how many people don't even get that much.

Also the 4k streaming you are getting isn't true 4k content. It's a compressed mess.

I wouldn't say mess. Many uhd hdr streaming is actually very good.

But you know what I mean.

Just like I'd be willing to guess most of the general population thinks that streaming HD Netflix or FIOS is as good quality as bluray. Many people probably can't tell the difference, or they don't care about the differences though, so it doesn't matter to them anyways.

Right. UHD HDR streams are about on par with 1080p Blu-Ray in sharpness if not slightly better but the HDR adds an element that surpasses the 1080p disc. Without the HDR it's no better than 1080p Blu-Rays. The buggest drawback for me is always the audio. No lossless.

Let's not even talk about basic optometry. Find me one audiologist that says 24bit/192KHz audio is needed or even appreciated by human ears.

Pro ~$399 4.2 Tflops

Slim ~$299 1.8 Tflops
Xbos ~$299 1.4 Tflops

Pro is the easy choice I think, except maybe for the few who are really into 4k discs or maybe have a Xb exclusive they really want. Pro is much stronger, has 1Tb Hd, can do Vr if you get into that, will probably upscale a bit to 4k, but much less than the others so it will look much better. Waiting a year for Scorpio could be an option if you sit close to your TV.

The pro is the obvious choice. I mean $100 for almost 3 times the performance. I can't imagine the poor kids playing PS VR on the regular PS4.
