Just got a new BFG 5900nu from newegg.com

After installing last night I noticed in the NV control panel thingy, that the temps being reported are 56C core GPU and 36C ambient... doesnt that seem a bit high? Thats at idle windows desktop (1600x1200x60Hzx32bit).

I have yet to have 5 free mins to actually play a game with it and let her stretch her legs (and check temps).

How and where do I get to the OCing of this lovely deivce too?

I think at idel my 5900NU @ 450\900 runs like 46C. At load it hits near 60 I believe.

Still a bummer to be idling so warm... maybe a break in period.

Just for your reference, I have an eVGA 5900nu. My room temp is about 75F. Idle core is 45C. 56C seems kind of high at idle. at full load mine runs at 58C - 60C.

Different cooling systems. We want to know ambient temp that the GPU reports, not room temp.

On another note, could it be possible that the BFG fan/hs is not properly contacting the GPU. BFG has an awsome support plan and warranty. Before you go taking your card apart to check it out, call BFG and ask them if the temperature is normal or is there something wrong. It seems pretty high at idle to me. When you get a chance, you should loop 3dmark to get the gpu running hot and then let us know what your temps under load are or if you get lockups and artifacts. Do not overclock your card for this test as that will certainly make it run hotter.

Actually on that note, I jsut cant beleive the ambiant temp is 36C (96F).
The room the PC sits in is pretty cool to start with ~65F and the machine has pretty decent airflow and normal operating temps (per MBM).

What are you case (ambiant) temps at?

Maybe my BFG is just registering high?

Vian, room temps are a factor.

My ambient temp is 38 C
Core is holding at 49 C at idle

Also, my core threshold slowdown temp is set to 145 C. You would think the gpu would catch fire at that kind of temp huh..

Gah. His ambiant is HIGHER than mine and his core is LOWER?
Thats not good.

Is there a program to test (stability in an OC) and/or burn in a GFX card?

How is your case ventilation? did you try removing the side panel to see if it has any effect? Is your PC case warm to the touch? Mine is cool.
I only have the PSU fan, and no extra case fans.

Ventilation is good.. not "great" but front and back case fans, BFG fans are spinning and not blocked at all.
I cant take the side panel off right now (at work) so I can only control software from here.

I forgot to mention that I ordered the BFG last night from GameVE.com. 169.00.

When I get it I can give you better comparisons. I'm installing it in my wifes rig and removing the 9700.

OC? Coolbits, found here:

OverClocker's - AU

If you'll check the temp limits in the advanced properties you'll see you're nowhere near what Nvidia deems is too much. It's my understanding that the chip can go beyond CPU limits before it gets critical. Temps in the 50's aren't unusual.

Some people have theirs up at 90C; I wouldn't worry about 56C. And if you still are worried, check to make sure the hsf is making good contact or have an extra fan blow on it. There's also the possiblity it's reading the temps wrong.

Eh... you may want to check the thread HERE

The 590nu from gameve is an OEM! I am returning it!

Dunno if that matters to you or not, but just a heads up.

Yeah I noticed that the default warning level was some insane 130+C or something like that. So I figured it COULD go much higher if thats what NV tosses in as a default alarm.

Ah I thought the coolbits was just for taking it PAST the default sliders that NV gave you. Apparently though they give you no sliders by default and the coolbits just unlocks em.

Thanks man.

Yep, evidently Nvidia believes that the PCB will melt before the chip overheats - lol.

Exactly, all Coolbits does in "un-hide" the sliders. I wish I had information about how to go past them, but as of yet I can't get my 5900 past the 500/1ghz allowed anyway - lol.

I've heard that if you up the 2d sliders then it will allow higher selections, but I have no 1st hand experience.

google coolbits and find a regedit to increase slider values. Krusty/Bart settings in coolbits??

did it quick and found it- here!!

I did this back in the day of my Ti500, but not with a new FX series card. I think it's only using a % value, so it should still work!!

My 5900nu idles at 46c, but I wouldnt worry about it being 56. Your case probably doesn't have enough airflow.

Thank you for the heads up. I cancelled my order with them and bought from BuyXtremeGear.com for 161.00.
I called them up and they said it was bundles with CoD. However, I doubt it for that price. We shall see.

Thanks Again.
