So I have a vote for the Tomahawk, and one for the ASUS Pro-WS and maybe one for the Crosshair. Well, I can't get the MSI unless I am a bot or obsessed or pay scalper prices. The cross hair is more and so I think I will go with the Pro-WS.

The radiator size of NH-D15 and NH-D15S is plenty for a 142 W heat source. There is no need for a second fan on the radiator. Edit, that is, the total fin surface area of the radiator is large enough to require only moderate flow speed of the cooling air, and at the same time, aerodynamic resistance of the radiator is low enough to require only moderate pressure difference to maintain this flow speed.

(Important is the fan placement in the case though, if it is a closed case. And whether the CPU cooler gets its own intake air, or receives the exhaust air of a GPU. Also, cool the heat sources on the mainboard; a tower-style CPU cooler doesn't do so.)

I have the X570 Tomahawk paired with my 3800X and I really like this board. VRMs that rival some premium boards that are several hundred more. Will be my board of choice when I'm able to upgrade my home and work computer to Zen 3 probably next year when inventory is actually available.

I’ve had the most “luck” with Best Buy - I’ve gotten multiple items in my cart multiple times.... just have never actually completed a transaction. I’ve only gotten one thing in my cart once at new egg, and never at Amazon

I’ve mostly been checking them out on launch days, but have caught stock notifications on the Hard forums 3 separate times. I understand it’s easier to find stock at BB because They have been fairly consistent at adding stock around 11am eastern, and they don’t drop the whole supply at once - you get to have 15 minutes of watching out go on and out of stock instead of 30 seconds

OK, both motherboards are here, both good recommendations I think, so thanks to all, especially @IEC and @TennesseeTony (I think I got that right, will edit if not)

Now, they both seem well built, the ASUS WS is a little heavier, but it was $50 more. So now, I am going to build TWO 5950x boxes ! When I can get them and 6800XT's to go with. I already have NVME's for both and memory for both and power supplies and HSF's. I just ordered a case, if I like it I will order another.

Again, now its up to CPU and video cards when available.

I have a growing pile of hardware that I am not using, I think a 2600k, a 14 core Xeon, and some other "weenie" stuff. PM me if interested. (I see virtuallary PM'ing me in my future)

computerbase.de benchmarked the ECO mode alongside stock mode with 5950X, 5900X, 5800X, and 5600X. (source, in German)

They say that some BIOSes let you set ECO mode directly, while others require that PBO is selected in the BIOS, and ECO mode then needs to be activated in Ryzen Master.

ECO mode results in the following power limits:

Conclusion, for computationally intensive loads on multiple cores:

• On Ryzen 9 5950X, stock settings are of questionable use. ECO mode should be preferred unless you have got to prove something.
• On Ryzen 9 5900X, Ryzen 7 5800X, and Ryzen 5 5600X, stock settings are useless. Set it to ECO mode right away and never look back.

That is exactly in line with my own experimental findings. It is why I ran my 3950X that @Icecold now owns at 87W PPT, and why I run my 3700X at 60W PPT. You lose nothing in ST or lightly-threaded performance by doing this, and lose ~5-10% on MT depending on your silicon lottery. The ability to customize PPT for the sweet spot for perf/W for your specific application is really quite nice.

I will of course do the same once I am able to obtain a 5000 series CPU (probably 2Q 2021 at this rate...).

2 weeks and a day until my 5950x is supposed to ship. I now have the 4000 cl18 64 gig of memory, the case is due Tuesday, I have the mounting hardware and the D15 HSF, the motherboard, the NVME 500 gig drive and the PSU. I have no ETA on the 6800XT, but if I can get the system up, then at least I will be ready. I can't wait....

And I also have a second motherboard, NVME drive, memory and PSU already for the next 5000 series chip and 6800XT.

Damn these shortages.....

I’m really curious to see if the 5950x is more efficient per watt than a threadripper 3990x. Maybe someone has already done that comparison and I haven’t seen it?

In any case, I’m like in for 2 5950s, assuming my 470x mother board gets a zen3 bios.

Very interesting. 5950 ECO mode pulls ahead of the 3990x stock, so almost certainly ECO 3990x beats the ECO 5950x.

Does AMD offer an ECO mode for Threadripper? Though maybe Threadripper BIOSes have got an option to modify the PPT limit. (EPYC BIOSes have it, at least the AMI BIOS which SuperMicro uses has it. But EPYCs have strict lower and upper bounds for cTDP and PPT which the user cannot exceed. cTDP Low for EPYC 7702 and 7702P is 165 W, which is really low for a 64-core CPU.)

Although this article refers to changing the "TDP" rather than PPT on a Threadripper 3970X it's clear they are modifying the latter. There's no mention of an ECO mode but the PPT can be changed in Ryzen master or in the Bios.
