because if you look hard enough you can get a 8800GT for ~$230. You really think if the 8800GTS comes out at $300 (best case) it will be worth an extra $70? And that is at best case. It is more likely the 8800GTS will NOT be $300....it will be closer to $350...cause of gouging for at least the first month...so thats really like..a $120 difference...NOT WORTH IT AT ALL. And while all that is going on the 8800GT will get cheaper due to being out for longer.
Agreed.
now if you could get a v2 8800GTS for about the same price as an 8800GT and an aftermarket cooler, then id say get the the v2 8800GTS.
But thats not likely to happen anytime soon.

shabby,
Im not posting to argue with you.
Your reasoning is VERY sound, i had the exact same reasoning because it makes sense.

Im just trying to communicate what i've seen first hand.

The 8800gtx with its extra SP's and better memory bus plus more memory to boot, still doesnt keep it from being matched by an 8800GT or V2 8800GTS.

And from the numbers i just saw, an 8800GT vs the V2 8800GTS at the same clock speeds
will perform darn near the same despite the GTS's extra SP's.

So you have an 8800GTX with more memory, higher memory bus and more SP's
And a V2 8800GTS with more SP's and a dual slot cooler
And both of their performances can be matched by an OC'ed 8800GT

Darn right it makes no sense...but that doesnt make it any less true.

requiem1: Your comparing the best case scenario right now with the gt with the worst case scenario with the gts based on a bunch of if's. Since the 8800gt is selling for less the msrp then whose to say the gts wont?

MTDEW: well since the msrp of the 512mb gt is 250-299 and the gts is 300-349 then go get the basic gts since a good cooler is around 40-50.

That will surely depend on the games, you'll see more gains with more complex ones. The extra sp's simply cant be useless.

LOL
Nvidia isnt paying me any $$$ to sell an 8800GT over a v2 8800GTS, im just trying to share info so others can choose for themselves.

I dont think it gets much more complex than Crysis at the moment.

And an 8800GT at the same clock speeds as a v2 8800GTS at 1920x1200 gets 1fps less than the V2 8800GTS.

Shame of it is, none of them get playable framerates in Crysis at 1920x1200.
That sux

That extra frame counts for a lot when every card runs it at 20 some fps.
Btw where are you getting these equally clocked benchmarks from?

Man, you sound just like me when i tested my first 8800GT against my 8800GTX.

I was like...."but it only has a 256 mem bus, its has less SP's and less onboard memory...This cant be true, it makes no sense!"

I am not comparing the best case for 8800GT...I can go find a 8800GT right now for $230...best case would be $180 (MSI 8800GT $210 @ Dell + 20% deal + 20% off with Paypal) as for the 8800GTS that is not worse case..worse case would be around $399...$350 is very practical..and most likely going to be the price for the new 8800GTS. Bottomline: I am not stepping up to this from my 8800GT unless it requires me to pay ~$50 or less (extra SP + dual slot cooler worth it...i guess) - not a cent more.

By Feb 2008 - I am sure this will change drastically of course...

Just wait till i start calling you names, then we'll really be arguing
Obviously the extra cost has no effect on me, unless your looking for change in the couch cushions you ought to get the gt.
The extra sp's and alu power will come in handy in the future, just like the 48 pixel pipes came in handy for the x1900. The 7900gtx cant come close to the x1900xtx now.

But believe me, if the v2 8800GTS was worth it, i'd buy it in a sec.

It magically changed to the 11th, no idea why.

I'll take a stab, replenishment of GT supply. GT pricing where it should be, GTS at $350

They'd sell 100K of each in a week if that were the case..

People keep on calling the V3 GTS a V2... nvidia has 3 cards with the 8800GTS designation...
As someone else said. It would be better called the geforce 8800WTF

The 8800GTS V2 looks like a decent card. I really doubt that it will be $100 more than the 8800GT 512MB, if it is it will have limited sales and the price will come back down. Not really worth more than $50 premium over the 8800GT. Also if you're looking for dual slot 8800GT check this out, looks like Zalman cooler on overclocked 8800GT - this may be equivalent to the GTS and hopefully cost less: Palit 8800GT Sonic.

And soon afterwards, the 8800OMGWTF? Then a BBQ edition?

LOL!

@BSIX: 8800gts 512 will command more than a $50 price premium over 8800gt. the 8800gt ssc is supposed to occupy that slot, and the ssc can't get the extra 16 SP's that the gts has and thus won't ever combat an ultra at high res with AA/AF. A gts at ssc or higher speeds will be VERY close in most games I suspect, and the 1gb version might just be an ultra-killer.

I'm tired of the frustration, difficulty, and price issues in choosing an nVidia solution. This whole GT/GTS quandry. Should I spend $300 on a GT or should I wait for GTS. Will GTS be worth it. Will it be available. Will price drop on GT, blah blah. nVidia, you just lost a fanboy (for now).

On the way... two VisionTek 3870's. My Asus P5E x38 Q6600 rig will accept them nicely. I hate the thought of Crossfire. It's a waste of resources. But damn it my hand's been forced! Oh well, should be fun. Gonna oc the hell out of those cards and see what I can do.

3DMark 06, here I come!!
