I used to use Nero 7.0.1.4. It worked fine though I had some issue with it.
Ever since I installed Nero 7.0.5.4, I can't go back the way it was.
No matter which version (new or old) I installed, my optical drives disappeared. And I have to use NTI's burning software instead.
And NTI is no angel either. Whenever I defrag my registry, NTI shows 1% improper installation and requires reinstallation.

Any suggestion for a good CD/DVD burning software?

I, personally, use Nero 7.0.5.4 and haven't had any troubles. I have heard of a few that have. It might help us if we knew more about your system and the hardware you have. Maybe someone will recognize something that will help point you to your problem.

As far as burning software goes, I've always preferred Nero over Roxio ... but Roxio also has its loyal fan base. I've also heard that Nero and Roxio don't reside well on the same system ... but I don't know if there is really truth to that or not.

Anyway, tell us more about your system ... your chipset, ide drivers, etc. Lets have it all, it might help us find the source of your troubles.

Windows XP sp2

Lite-On LTR-522465
Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-109

I think there is something in Nero conflicting with windows.
When Nero is installed, Device Manager shows all my optical drives malfunctioning, even for the Alcohol emulation drive. I tried uninstall them and restart, they are found and installed at startup, but same as before can't be shown.

What about your chipset and your IDE controllers?

When you say Device Manager shows all your drives malfunctioning, what symbol is on them? Did you open up properties? What does it say in "Device Status?"

We need this information. Actually, the more details, the better. If you re-read my post above, you'll see me request that information. However, if you re-read your response, you'll see you really didn't give us much to work with.

At any rate, its critical we know what "Device Status" is saying about your malfunctioning optical drives. You'll find "device status" by opening up device manager and double clicking on the malfunctioning devices. Tell us what its saying there in your next message.

I'm not sure about my chipset and IDE controllers, but I'm using a Soyo SY-P4I865PE Plus Dragon 2 v1.0 motherboard.
I'm using NTI now, so I can't find out what exactly the device status is.
There were red crosses across the optical device icons. But it's something about the device driver corrupted under windows xp.

No Starforce IDE drivers, not that I know of. But there is a Starwind driver from Alcohol 120%.

The way I see it, the more "advanced" Nero gets, the more installation problem I have.

I like the old versions better, like before ver. 6.

Not saying that it can explain conflicts, because Starforce claims not, but to see if they are installed, go into device manager and under "View" click "Show hidden devices". Under non-play and play drivers they should easily recognized. There is a removal tool at the Starforce site.

Nero 7 is a completely different (and worse) program than 6.

6 is still being developed and supported, so there's no reason to use 7.
