New AMD64 build is Slow! Advice Needed

I recently upgraded the following PC:

Athlon XP 2400+ @2250 (150x15)
Abit NF7-S Rev2.0
512mb pc3200
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
80gb WD IDE interface
TB Santa Cruz
NEC 3500A
WinXP Pro SP2

to the following:

Athlon 64 2800+
Asus K8N (non deluxe)
512mb pc3200
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
80gb WD SATA interface
TB Santa Cruz
NEC 3500A
WinXP Pro SP2

The new machine seems to be slower in every aspect when compared to the old machine. I have already installed the nvidia nforce3 250 drivers. I also double checked to see if the CPU speed is correctly recognized (1800mhz - 200x9) and it is being reported correctly. However, this new system is slower across the board. 3DMark05 scores are lower - 2233 vs 2146 as well as all multimedia applications. Sandra scores are also pretty low and it just seems more 'slow' in general. I had the understanding that the 64 2800+ would be faster than the XP 3200+. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

What about overclocking it to the same degree you had the XP OCed? Or can that not be done?

Fire up UT2004 Demo and use the benchmarking feature. Compare your Botmatch scores. Or do a real-world encoding job or something. Sandra... Next thing you'll be believing Sandra's voltage and temperature readings...

Also, which order did you install stuff in? Suggested routine:

1) Windows
2) Service packs for Windows
2.5) DirectX 9 (SP2 for WinXP incorporates this however)
3) Motherboard drivers
4) Video and other drivers

Lastly, put your sound card in PCI slot #4, which isn't sharing interrupts with any of the onboard stuffs.

Yes that is the same order as I installed. I had SP2 slipstreamed into my install CD so I went directly to install the nforce drivers. UT2004 is definetly slower than my previous machine. I haven't tried overclocking this system yet.

edit* sound card was also placed in PCI slot #4.

I had a similar experience. I went from an XP1700+ (OCd to 2300mhz) to an Athlon64 2800+ and was disappointed. I didnt think it was any faster...infact it did feel slower. I think that in feel when you are talkin very OCd XPs vs Athlon64s (esspecially the lower clocked ones) the XPs are still faster...

T_T you're comparing an overclocked chip to a non-overclocked chip, kind of an unfair comparison.

True but the AXP doesn't have an onboard memory controller and improved core like the A64 does. Also, the A64 has a higher FSB at default than the overclocked AXP chip. I'd say that you are right, it's not fair, but to the AXP not to the A64.
