Haha, I've been there. I've set my boots on the base/post that they were talking about.

Good to see American troops patting themselves on the back for not murdering innocent people, as though it's some kind of achievement. Of course I throw a little party every night before bed to celebrate another day without murdering someone.

Actually, Fox News was doing the patting.

They're not patting themselves on the back. The media is.

OK fair enough.

Still, it's kind of silly that the news is practically worshiping these people for not killing civilians.

Considering many, arguably most armies in the world have a shoot-first-and-ask-questions-later policy, it is something to boast about. Nevermind the fact that precision warfare is a difficult thing to pull off in and of itself. Admittedly it probably wasn't that hard in this case, and Fox did go over the top with the commentary, but hey, it's Fox News.

Yeah, well people these days get all uppity about civilians dying. Don't think it was such a big deal in wars pre-vietnam.

The increased focus on minimizing civilian casualties comes from a significant change of leadership and change in policy and implementation of policy that came about in May when Gen. David McKiernan was asked to step down...

It was generally considered that Gen McKiernan's approach to Afghanistan was too 'Big Army' or conventional army thinking that didn't fit the battlefield, and was replaced by Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal and who's SOF and Counterinsurgency background better fit the requirements of the current battlefield...

Text

I am sure the reporting and focus of limiting civilian casualties is being emphasized because of this change...

Seven years later and we're still hunting these guys?

Maybe we can ask the Russians for tips.

Think of it this way. You know how we get police brutality threads and we have to be reminded that most cops are probably good people and it's a relatively small percentage that are unprofessional? And then someone points out that you don't often see news stories about cops doing their job because it isn't interesting enough to make the news.

Well, this is basically one of those rare news stories to show that most of the time, the military does do its best to avoid civilian casualties. They're obviously not perfect, but without any reporting on good practices, people only hear about bad practices, and it gives them a skewed impression of what things are like.

We're not saints but this is simply an illustration of what things are like when all the proper procedures are followed. If I remember correctly, the most recent controversy surrounding civilian deaths due to an air strike resulted from someone not following the rules the way they should have.

Correct me if I'm wrong... but Russia never won against the Afghans right?
