I actually have two cases for my 17" PB .....

One for work and business travel: The Racer-X by SF Bags , the owner, Gary , is a great guy and their stuff is very well made.

And another for when I travel for pleasure: The VoltXL by Spire . Their backpacks are also well built and nicely balanced. It also has a great rigid shell that comes with it.

Enjoy your PB!

thanks for all the help so far. Now i've got to put some RAM in this thing. I'm running on 512 MB for right now.

Here are a couple of options I have found :

1. mushkin 1 gig for $239 or 512 for &106
http://www.mushkin.com/epages/Mushkin.s...9c2740c0a8010205df/Product/View/991304

2. Geil 512 mb for $119 from outpost
http://shop4.outpost.com/product/4036262?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

3. crucial 512 for $95.99
http://www.crucial.com/store/MPartspecs...+%2817%2Dinch+Display%29&WSPN=CT434061

I dont understand why the crucial 1 gig stick is $450.

Suggestions?

I'd go for the mushkin 1gig.

Install the stick, play the PowerBook hard for a few hours with some games, and then quickly boot up the hardware diagnostics and do the extended ram test to check it out.

Crucial prices have been all over the place of late. I agree with halfadder about mushkin.

I've bought memory from MemoryX several times, here's their 1.67 GHz PB 17" memory page. They saved me a year ago when I could not get any other vendor's 1 GB stick to work in my 12" PB. Even went through two Crucial sticks before I found them. Good service, too

I have a 1gb pc2700 stick from kingmax for my powerbook. Cost me right around $200 from newegg. I'm pretty sure they are still right around or just below $200. It works great, and I use this machine hard, never had any problems with it. Also, there is a link on the powerbook section of the www.macnn.com boards to outpost.com. There is a 1gb stick for $160 from frys through them... seems to work well in most powerbooks... might be worth the look.

As far as bags go, I have a laptop specific bag from crumpler (do a google search). I also have a sleave from www.radtech.us to put in my daily northface pack... keeps the powerbook nice and safe!

You don't have to ask him to head to Google to find Crumpler! They're right here: http://www.crumplerbags.com

I might add that they have one of the weirdest naming schemes (or websites, for that matter) that you'll ever find. Want to get a Crisp Suit for that PowerBook, or a School Hymn 17?

Wuzup,

Do you like the Powersleevz? I have several of the Radtech products (great company) and I'm about to take delivery of a new 12" PB to be my "travel" monster (the machine that gets tossed in all sorts of bags and dragged around), I was thinking of getting the Powersleevz so that I can carry it in my regular work bag. Is it a pain to take off and put on?

Or, and Purpledemon, the Crumpler stuff is great (I "stealth" carry my camera gear in a modified Crumpler). But pay close attention to the size of the bag, I remember being surprised the first time I saw a bunch of their stuff in their retail store, the laptop bags were larger than I though they would be. Of course, I'm a small woman so it may be a bigger deal to me...

Cheers,

JT

I have a Marware SportFolio for my PowerBook 15" and love it. I'm taking the plunge and upgrading to the 17" PowerBook myself.

From my experience, I've found that Crucial RAM has had the best results in my Mac systems over the years. Never had an issue with any of their memory.

Did anyone buy that Mushkin 1GB stick? That price is about half of what Crucial wants for theirs. Just realized! That's tempting!

I actually don't have the powersleeve, I have the glove series sleeve that they sell in their bags section. IMHO the powersleeve will only prevent scratches, and should only be used if your powerbook is in a padded compartment. The glove series is padded neoprene (sp?) and it's very easy to slip your powerbook in and out of. It offers a medium level of protection which is perfect if you're carrying it in a bookbag or whatnot. I carry it with my other text books/notebooks without worry - they run $30 I believe

I havent run a full battery of extended tests yet, but I plan on doing that as soon as possible.

heh ..

I had WoW installed the first night I got the new machine ...

That game is a lot of fun and it looks great on the powerbook.

btw : does anyone have any insight into what the key differences are between the various microsoft office versions for the mac?
It looks like the Office Pro only adds windows xp + virtual pc to the standard package.
But, whats the difference between the standard and the student/teacher version?
I need some version of it, just not sure if I should pay more to get the standard version.

There's no difference between the standard and teacher/student beyond what you mentioned. I have the teacher/student version of Office X (huge $$ savings obviously) and have not found fault with it. I actually now prefer the Mac version of Word (though I am not a big Word fan to begin with).

Sounds like you're enjoying Lapzilla. My daughter and I play Neverwinter's Night together on our Mac laptops.

Oh, and thanks Whazup, that sleeve looks nice.

I really like the integrated bluetooth for a wireless mouse and interface with PDA.

But you'll never convince a PC gamer to like a Mac because it can't play HL2.

/yawn

Meanwhile every CD they listen to and every magazine they read was made on a Mac.

Another vote for sidetrack, I love that utility... and it's a lot safer than a kernel hack too.
