My understanding is that even though it's widely believed that beta max is better than vhs in terms of video quality, that this was somewhat of a disputed fact, that the difference in quality was actually neglible. And since I believe vhs had a longer tape running, the choice was vhs.

And about your apple commercial... since PCs are a fraction of the cost of macs, shouldn't a few PC guys jump out to beat up the Apple guy simultaneously?

Here's the thing, to me, you can't really say Macs are better looking than PCs. you can say Macs are better looking than anything Dell or HP or those generic crap you see at Frys can ever offer.

edit: about the commericals, they are annoying. They re-enforce how I feel about Mac users. Personally I think Apple makes fine products, but it's the attitude they attach to their products that makes me not want to buy an Apple.

tons. you never really need to deal with drivers for stuff whenever you hook something up to a mac... the drivers are already in there. you never really have any compatibility issues with a mac.

Not true.

If the camera is newer than your OS, it won't be detected correctly unless you install updates. And that's one of the things that those commercials are trying to say, that PCs are inferior because they need frequent updates.

I've got three operating systems on my computer, all of which I'd rather have than MacOSX. Yet I'd be an absolute idiot if I called it "three PCs in one" because of it. It's one damn computer, Apple just realized that their OS sucks and giving in and selling their competitors products is all they can do.

Craftmanship is quality? What the hell are you talking about? It's a computer! Who cares how the "craftmanship" is?

I love mac fans.

Apple fans are some of the most sheepish people out there. Purely emotional thinkers who use little to no logic.

Remember when the G5 came out? You had thousands of little fanboys who were nothing more than mouthpieces for Apple, proclaiming the G5's superiority, even though benchmarks showed the Athlon outperforming it. The benchmarks Apple showed didn't even make an attempt at being objective (like the benchmarks you see on Anandtech), yet Apple fans bought it hook and sinker without even thinking about it.

They were very vocal that the PowerPC architecture was better than Intel's X86 architecture.

Here is where their sheepishness came into play again: When the rumors of Apple using Intel's chips surfaced, the vocal Apple loyalists instantly shot down the rumor which conflicted with that which their master told them. In fact, they were sickened by the idea. Yet when Steve Jobs announced the news, the flock instantly accepted it and rejoiced.

Too much emotion + too little logic= idiotic Mac fanboys.

You're right, I should probably install it over Solaris which obviously sucks.

Is MacOS stable? Sure. Is it annoying? Yes. Does it work with the vast majority of software out there? No. Is it good for anything except a few specific tasks? No.

No you dolt, emachines sucks cuz they use cheap components, thus allowing them to sell a $300 computer. There is no such thing as "craftmanship" determining how good a computer is. It's ok though, think what you want, at least when your dolt kind calls me for help I can say "sorry, get a real computer" and not have to do anything.

With that aside.....

I asked for a MacBook Pro for Christmas once Memron comes out. I like macs; they are a prettier Lunix system. Now that i do some (and i want to stress that) developing (Perl, Java, and alittle C++) i find that working with windows is tedious. I like the fact that i can use Lunix utlities like 'wc -l' and grep to do useful things in everyday life.

The commericals are filled with half-truths but so is most marketing and thats what these are, commercials. MARKETING PEOPLE. I hate the Burger King Dude, scares the sh!t out of me. But you dont see me going around saying things.

Anyway, i am going to agree with an earlier post, they are witty, new and fresh. I enjoy them for what they are Propagandic Marketing, nothing more.

Not entirely true. Mac have drivers for hardware that they support, and same as the WinTel.

PC users tend to ignores the fine print on the boxes when purchasing product because they assume everything would run on a PC, while Mac don't have the luxury of large hardware inventory as PS therefore Mac users tend to read up the product before purchasing.

The reason why Apple gets a reputation for "superior" hardware isn't because it's different than what's available on PC, it's because they run on a limited selection of hardware, which is tested for compatibility. Whereas a PC is designed so that you can plug in any old peripheral from KrappE Technologies, and Windows will try to install drivers and run it.

Obviously if anyone who knows what they're doing throws together a computer, with quality components, it will be just as stable as a Mac.

stability + mac don't always go together.. my dad has so many problems w/ OSX it's ridiculous. he's had to reinstall the OS at least 5 times. when do i reinstall OSes? when i want to, not because some file got corrupted.

apple has a clever way for doing their commercials...though i still dislike them.

cant really say macs > pcs because they literally have identical components now, but i can say that osx > windows xp and windows xp > osx. both have their pros and cons. let them be.

but i do hate the loyal apple fanboys who hail steve jobs and treat him like an emperor. all he did was take unix and give it a UI (i think - i dun wanna get flamed for it). and when he went from the G3,G4,G5, everyone was so damn happy and were bashing intel and amd because their processors were inferior to their "superior" G3,G4,G5. well whatever. they need to come out of their little plastic cubes, laptops and aluminum desktops/notebooks and smell the fresh air (sorry for the mac hardware references). macs are basically PCs with a different OS and case and keyboard buttons. thats it, plain and simple. sure mac osx is better security wise (hardly any viruses/spyware), but thats taken into consideration because...well, no one really cares (or has) a mac to even make a virus for. PCs are better in terms of graphics and upgradability (excluding powermac G5 and even then so i havent seen/heard of many people putting pci cards in it afterwards).

they have their differences. its competition that drives prices...and also marketing (and in this case, commercials). though apple is a bit stupid at pricing their computers higher than everyone else, because you can get a similarily, if not much better computer for the same price (maybe even WITH a monitor) but thats how they get their money. but they certainly will not get my money, especially after shelling out $300 bucks for a 5G ipod which got messed up last week.

you must not check the news much, i've seen a whole lot about ipods scratching too easily, the black macbooks flaking off, and the white ones yellowing. and working in a place that repairs ipods, i can definately say they aren't the most reliable of things.

my gf has a imac thats she's had for almost 3 years, my sister has an emachine that she's used for 4 years. on the imac the modem has gone out, 2x, cost of repair from apple >$150. the emachine had the modem go out also, cost of repair, well nothing really since i had one lying around.

and i certainly haven't been impressed with osx stability. i've learned how to fix macs just from the number of times i've had to fix my gf imac, and mac book pro from crashes and other bugs.

but all that really matters is they look pretty and are trendy...silly me
