I've been looking for a decent MVA panel for the better black levels, but most apparently have response times that would be a downgrade from my 2209WA. I've been considering the Eizo Foris FS2331, which is supposed to be released in NA on April 1, but that's probably going to be in the $500 range for 23"... Might wait for reviews on the Asus to see if it's at all useful for gaming.

I would go with the IPS panel: I have experience with two Dell monitors with IPS panels that I have really liked. However I have not had any experience with MVA panels.

Are there independently-dimmable color channels for the backlight? Without confirmation that several colors are used, I wouldn't touch an LED backlight display with a 10' pole.

LEDs cand be used well, but at that price, I would be leery, and stick with fluorescent.

Yes. A white LED is a blue LED with phosphors that over-do the red/orange, to fool you into seeing white (except when you see something purple, yellow, pink brown, etc.), and there are only a small handful that would be suitable for good lighting. Even then, for color adjustments, separate colors of LEDs would be superior, and certainly cheaper, too.

How the heck is seperate color LED cheaper? RGB LED monitors are insanely pricy though all the ones I've seen or heard about are professional grade monitors. This is really tempting considering the price is under $250. I've been waiting for an IPS LED forever, but I would love a professional review where a graphics professional with a calibrator can comment on color accuracy.

Looks like Newegg just put up a new version of the NEC 23" with an led backlit.

Today must be a good day for low price ips monitors at newegg.

It even comes with spreakers!

From newegg: "NEC Display Solutions EA232WMi Black 23" 5ms Full HD Height,Swivel & Pivot Adjustable IPS Panel LED Backlight LCD Monitor Slim Design w/Spreakers 250 cd/m2 1,000:1"

TN must be EOLed. No way can they exist at current Price levels with these panels taking the $250ish price point. Hell, a year ago my TN was that price point.

This is kind of a big deal. No longer do we have to settle for crap panels with crap color gamuts, crummy text and crap viewing angles. Of course, some IPS/MVA/PVA panels will be better than others. I have to say, watching a first BluRay (The Matrix) on my new $150 PVA panel is quite freakin' nice.

White power LEDs do not tend to be the cheapest in general, and while I don't know about the likes of Osram, HP, Philips, etc. Nichia's pretty proud of their better ones, typically being dollars each. As in, a 'white' LED that actually would look as good as what you'd be used to from CCFL.

I wish I had a bigger desk. As more of these come out, which I can only hope they do, I'm going to be more and more tempted to replace my trusty 20WMGX2.

My primary monitor is P-MVA (Benq FP241W) I've had it since 2007 and the damn thing still sells for the price I bought it for (just over $1000 in Australia)

but yeah the quality on it is fantastic and I haven't had any problems with ghosting (and yes I do play FPS games..not many it's not my genre of choice but I do play some) you can definitely get some where response time is a problem but with a bit of research that's easy to avoid.

just a quick question of curiosity...I had the panel replaced last year cause there was some 'bruising' on it...is there anyway to tell what panel they replaced it with (ie if it's the same as the original since that line is discontinued)..it still looks great so I don't really care hense the question just being a curiousity (as I side note gotta love getting a fresh panel right at the end of warranty )

Note that he mentioned two different and important tech.
Color LED means RGB LED backlight, this provides better color then white LED.
Quality: Color LED > Fluorescent > White LED

And then there is the independently dimmable part... this one is a great boon, as it makes for much better blacks (plus saves some power), but again, cost goes up.

Supposedly 6ms by some press, oddly a spec not listed at newegg.
This was originally billed as a gaming IPS monitor. I would like to try it, but note the NEC and Asus in the OP claims faster.

by guess is that UH stands for "ultra hyped" .
seriously, companies will invent a million names for the same thing. Take a look in my sig for my thread about AA names. There are half a dozen names for the same things... in fact in one colossus WTF move nvidia once introduced a new technology... and invented THREE separate names for it in the same official news announcement. And of course both AMD and nVidia MUST invent a new name for any technology they copy from each other.
