it's pretty tight. obviously, Mike doesn't have anything to prove, and it seems his promise to fill Rev's shoes is holding true (meaning he isn't trying to get any spotlight).

The mixes on youtube are obviously not cd quality, but it's a pretty solid track.

It's called 'Nightmare' and should be found.. it's not supposed to be released until tomorrow so many of the leaks are getting flagged. but they can be found

yay

is portnoy just a guest on one song, or is he replacing the rev permanently?

he is a great drummer, but i cannot stand dreamtheater so i don't get to enjoy him

Interested in hearing this but sadly I'm at work and we don't have Youtube access. I'm wondering if they'll go on without the Rev after this album...he was responsible for a lot of the writing IIRC.

And was there ever a conclusive determination of the his death? I mean, it's no secret he love his drugs & booze but did the coroner ever release anything other than "undetermined"?

Check out OSI and Transatlantic. Two totally different kinds of music. MP is on the first 2 OSI cd's.

Yep, he's all but been hired full time for Avenged Sevenfold. He did all the drums on the new cd, AND is going to be their drummer for their first tour, indefinately, until they find someone to replace him. I don't think he's in a hurry to stop jamming with them. He seems pretty pumped about playing this kind of music.

Whether or not they go on, I'm not sure.

AVS fans are really lucky to have this CD. the rev wrote most of it, then he died. They couldn't find anybody to replace him, and someone jokingly said portnoy, his hero, should do it. If portnoy can't commit to them full time, they are going to be left with a pretty big fucking hole to fill. one they couldn't fill until MP came along. Sure, there are a few drummers as good as MP, but MP was the rev's idol and he spent his life trying to play like MP. The other good drummers won't fit in like MP does.

Avenged is a wild mix of progressive metal and melodic punk

Some songs are really, really awesome. Some are meh. They are very virtuous musicians.

I like A7X and the Rev was my inspiration for drumming, but I do agree this particular song is kinda meh.

They are quite talented musicians, and the vocals have been good since the first album. But oddly enough, the talent isn't even what drew me to their music (specifically, their older records. I discovered them late, back then I wasn't big into heavier rock).
Going back, it's more of the style and not musicianship. At least, skills don't stand out, the band just sounds like they meshed so perfectly together, that all members contributed equally and just worked to make their sound evolve over time.
But lyrically, is where they really draw me into the music. The stories they weave into their songs, and the way they translate the stories into a musical sound so perfectly... I just love them. And was also kind of upset the album that drew me into their music, also ended up being their least focused album to date (musically, each album varied, but conceptually, there didn't seem to be a story defining the album, or even a theme). Album sounds great, but it's more just the sound. I loved when they mixed the story and the sound so beautifully.

Wow that was weak and I'm an a7x fan. This isn't a good sign for the album but you never know with the first couple of singles. I didn't like Coheed's 2nd single HWAJ but the album turned out to be decent.

on that note - they make the album sound so much better live. Just saw them Saturday night. Second time seeing Chris Pennie in action, 1st time seeing him with material for which he was 100% responsible.

I still stand by the majority of the album is meh, but some of the songs sound great live.

Also, Guns of Summer live.... omg.
They opened with The Broken, then Juggernaut (of which both sound great live)... and I was like... well damn they skipped over Track 3! But I knew GoS would be later in the set, it had to be. It was, and I think I came.
Ended the show with a 3 track "encore". One of the weakest new album songs (can't recall the name, one I don't ever listen to on YotBR), then Welcome Home, and ended the night with 2113. Everything Evil, Time Consumer, and In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth were also played, masterfully I might add.

edit:
3rd time seeing Pennie in action live. 1st time was when was with Dillinger Escape Plan and they were one of the opening acts for Coheed and Cambria when Good Apollo vol1 was relatively new.
DEP, the frontman specifically, was insanely hardcore. Also saw a guy get knocked out by a flying bottle that ended up in the pit.

Hell, look at City of Evil. Bat Country may have been catchy, but it was probably the worst song on the album. That's not saying it was bad, but everything else on the album put it to shame.

Not indefinitely. DT is scheduled for a new album next year, so MP will have to drop out at the end of 2010 or early 2011. I'm sure A7X will have a pool of drummers to consider by then.

It's no Afterlife, Lost, Bat Country... etc.. etc.. but it is pretty solid.

Edit: Actually I'd venture to say its actually pretty good, I'm excited for their new album but it will be really tough to exceed City of Evil... and Avenged Sevenfold.

Nice, I'm going on the 27th and 28th. Awesome that they're playing Everything Evil again, and never seen 2113 live.

I went to 2006 tour where DEP and Chiodos and Fall of Troy opened. DEP was pretty bad live, actually got booed off the stage. But of course that wasn't Pennie's fault...

New album was pretty solid, not as good as the others but The Broken kicked ass as well as In the Flame of Error. Not a huge fan of Guns of Summer other than the killer drumming but I bet I will be after seeing it live. That track was just made for Chris Pennie who is arguably the best drummer right now (MP eat your heart out!).

Back to A7X, if the album sux I may not even buy tix to Uproar Tour but was hoping to see Disturbed at least once live in my life.

Their last self titled album was pretty good too IMO... Afterlife, Little Piece of Heaven, Almost Easy, Critical Acclaim all kicked ass (Scream and Dear God not so much).

The only thing I don't like about the song is that the interesting bridge comes at 5 - 5:30. Sounds out of place at the end. Also, the track seems naked without someone to sub in for Rev on background vocals and the chorus is pretty boring.

Unfortunately great drumming behind shitty music still equals shitty music... Mike, please come back to Dream Theater ASAP!

Yeah this song was kind of meh. I also tried listening to diamonds in the rough but never got into it, although I listened to their self titled probably 80 times

The song was okay. I give is a solid meh, but it would grow on me if I listened to it more.
