New Bacteria Strain Is Striking Gay Men

A new, highly drug-resistant strain of the ?flesh-eating? MRSA bacteria is being spread among gay men in San Francisco and Boston, researchers reported on Monday.

In a study published online by the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, the bacteria seemed to be spread most easily through anal intercourse but also through casual skin-to-skin contact and touching contaminated surfaces.

The authors warned that unless microbiology laboratories were able to identify the strain and doctors prescribed the proper antibiotic therapy, the infection could soon spread among other groups and become a wider threat.

I don't think MRSA is limited to homosexuals. My wife works in a hospital and probably deals with patients with MRSA every week.

I work in a hospital as well, we see possible MRSA cases all the times in my ER especially since its an inner city hospital and some of our patients dont have the best levels of sanitation/hygiene.

I just hate how this whole MRSA is getting blown up wayyyy outta proportion.

Yeah my health teacher and mom (doc) have said that the people "it" is inserted into generally have a higher risk of getting an std also their probably some other factors

Among gay men in the study, MRSA was spread by skin contact, causing abscesses and infection in the buttocks and genital area.

so apparently it is being transferred between private areas but since it is spread by skin contact it won't take long for it to appear in other places too.
