This was in response to Netflix's lowered price of $17.99. Nice thing about Blockbuster is the 2 instore rental coupons per month that are included with the $17.49 price.

What is F&F? Here are some others in the rental game:

I'm waiting to see how long Blockbuster's shipping is. So far, I ordered on Thursday morning, Blockbuster shipped on Friday and are scheduled to arrive on Tuesday. Netflix I order on Thursday, ship on Thursday and arrive on Friday or Saturday.

There was a Friends & Family code running around that saved you $2 a month. I believe that the normal price was $19.99 for 3 out. The F&F was $17.99. Now I see that the F&F is $17.49, the same as F&F. I am still on F&F, but not sure of the advantages, if any.

Friends & Family - $17.49 plus applicable tax you will receive unlimited movies, up to 3 at one time plus two e-coupons/month for free in-store movie or game rentals.*

3 at a time - $17.49 plus applicable tax you will receive unlimited movies, up to 3 at one time plus two e-coupons/month for free in-store movie or game rentals.*

I haven't tried anyone but Netflix but can't imagine switching. They ship movies from the same city I live in so I have 1 day turn around. I think it's no more than two days to anywhere.

Not really. I get my movies shipped to Cupertino and it can take anywhere from 2-4 days for delivery sometimes. There is a distribution center in San Jose, so its like 10 miles at most. Kinda sucks. It only takes 1 day for them to get my movies so I don't know whats going on.

I live within 20 miles of one of netflix's distribution center....get the dvds, send them back Wednesday, they receive the dvds Monday and then proceed to ship the next ones in queue out. When I canceled, they magically started receiving the dvds Thursday...

I think that Netflix thinks that the quick turnaround people are copying. I had Netflix for 6 months last year and I noticed a slow down. I returned all movies a day after receiving them. I woud never copy a movie that I do not own.

Have not seen this with Blockbuster, yet.

I looked at my history and recieved only 9 movies for the month of Sept. from Walmart. (on the 2 movie plan and sending them back the next day after getting them)
Still a good deal over renting each one individually, but I want to try others to see if they can perform better. I will try netflix if blockbuster can't do better.

Why would they care if you were copying. Besides, it takes longer to make a copy than to actually watch the movie (in theory only since I would never copy one either).

It's just a theory as to why the service slowed down. That is the beauty or Blockbuster. Use the coupons to rent the ones that you have to have from the store.

I did the trial and was going to cancel, it's going to be 4 days before I get them.

With the coupons, games being 6 bucks *2 will make it worth it.

Hmmm. Thinking.

Actually, its faster to copy than watch these days. When I get them I rip them and send them back ASAP because the turnaround is so long. Then I watch them when I want to. As it is now, I only get 3 movies a week at most from Netflix. If the selection was better at local blockbusters I'd just do that, because then I could watch one a day if I wanted to, or what I want to watch when I want to watch it.

The downside to these services is that if you feel like watching a particular kind of movie it takes almost a week to do it when you send your old ones back and wait for new ones. If the turnaround doesn't improve in the next month I'll just cancel the service.

Uh, so in your mind 12 movies a month at $1.50 each with the best selection in the world is a BAD DEAL?

(3 movies / week @ $18.00 / month)

Mmkay.

12DVDs/week at $22 /month, so closer to $2 since the rate change isnt even in effect yet.

And in a way, yes. When you go to the theater or movie rental place you don't pay your money then come back in a week to watch it do you? Its not the price that bothers me, its the waiting. Heck, you can download movies on P2P faster than it takes Netflix to get movies to my door.

I think I would rather pay $3 a movie and go to the local video store and see it right away instead of Paying a little less than $2 a movie and see it next week. I'm still on the fence. The big plus for Netflix is the selection. No local video store will be able to match it.

Yup, I recieved this email....

Over the last five years, we've grown the Netflix community to over 2.2 million satisfied members. We appreciate your business, and our goal has always been to provide you great service.

Since our price increase in June, some of our members have expressed concerns about the new pricing. We've listened to this feedback and are pleased to inform you that we're lowering the price of your Netflix 3-at-a-time program from $21.99 per month to 17.99 per month.

You don't need to do anything. Your membership will automatically move to the lower 17.99 price. The lower price will appear on your next bill on or after November 1, 2004. You will still get the same great service and convenience, but now you will pay less for it. So please sit back, relax and enjoy your movies!

Do they have a free trial of the Game Rental? That'd be even better. Especially if it's in-store.

I was with Netflix for a long time but they started pulling that shipping delay crap on me when I started renting a ton of dvds (getting 3 on monday, ripping them to HD and returning on Tuesday then watching the 3 while the dvds were in transit and deleting after I was done). Personally I see nothing wrong with it as long as you delete them when you are done. And a HD only holds so much room anyways so you can't just keep hoarding them forever. Anyways, shipping slowed way down after I guess they noticed my increased rentals.

I think I'm gonna try the blockbuster in-store program since there is one near me. $15 for the first month and $25/month after that. At 2 a day you can just stockpile for a month and then quit the next 2 months while you catch up. Well, thats my plan at least.

but you have to remember that when using the instore coupons that you have to turn them back in on time or be subject to late fees. I thought that one of the main reasons that you signed up for the online rentals was because of no due dates or late fees. I was with Blockbuster and canceled becuase I did not receive any coupons for the month of October and got no results from customer service. Or should I say what customer service. Try calling their 800 number, I did several times a day for several days and got nothing but busy signals. I canceled and signed up for Netflix and the turn around time is alot faster with Netflix.
