No, we certainly do not. I (and most geeks I know) were running AMD cpus until Intel's 'Conroe' / 'Merom' chips. My primary cpu was an Athlon 2500+ (Barton) until last year, when I got a 'Penryn' cpu.

That said, there was a fairly grim period after the introduction of Conroe, and the first generation of Phenoms didn't help matters much. Phenom II is quite another thing, and the Phenom II X4s have been very affordable. I recommend them to folks who don't want to spend $400+ on an Intel quadcore and motherboard (though this is changing with the recent Core 2 Quad price drops).

Before I make any concrete recommendations, as you're in Dubai, where do you plan on buying your kit (ie what are the prices)?

Me, I love AMD. Generally speaking AMD is best for professional work, particularly content creation and media. Intel is better for gaming, HTPCs, mobile, business, and general computing. Most of the systems people here put together fall into the Intel categories, which is why Intel remains more popular.

AMD's low end cpus are better for gaming that Intel's low end cpus. For that matter, gaming is one of the most favorable comparisons for AMD at this point.

But AMD's 45nm cpus are very competitive power consumption wise and could work for HTPCs (possibly underclocked thouhg).

AMD is also very price competitive when you take into account the cost of the motherboard and memory (if going ddr2).
