Edit: Other than using resource heavy poker-related programs this comp will be used for very basic things. Just want something stable that will be able to handle all the basics without lag.

Pretty much went with a lot of things that were on sale. Will reuse old HDDs and PCIe x16 GeForce 6600 video card.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz
GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 Mobo
G.SKILL 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
APEVIA X-CRUISER-BK Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Case
Rosewill RP550-2 ATX 2.01 550W Power Supply
Sony NEC Optiarc Black SATA 18X DVD±R DVD Burner

Let me know if any of these parts or combinations raises a red flag. Plan to order tomorrow.

Thanks in advance,
Josh

The only thing there that concerns me is your choice of power supply -- from what I've heard, Rosewill's been a real crapshoot quality-wise of late. I'd say it'd definitely be worthwhile to spend a bit extra to get a quality PSU that you won't have to worry about, like Enermax, Seasonic, Fortron, etc.

You probably won't need that much power for that system, either -- a good quality 400W PSU would still give you plenty of room for upgrades down the road.

The Fortons are usually less expensive. I bought one for my backup machine but I have a Seasonic for my main rig.

I'm not sure about that DVD-RW, but only found some good reviews on LG H22N lately but I found they're hard to find. Don't know about that case so I can't comment. I think main names in cases are Silverstone, Thermaltake, Antec, Coolermaster...

for the dvd burner...if you check around on newegg you can get a 20x lite-on SATA with lightscribe for around $40....never used lightscribe but looks like it could be cool and I dont think the media is expensive

otherwise thats a good motherboard choice at a great price...everything else looks good!

Amazon lists that LG H22 at $72 and lightscribe just seems unnecessary with the added price per disc.

What about this LG? It writes dual layer discs at 10x, 25% faster than that other one, and is one of the things my friend who I'm building this comp for is looking for.

If it's only going to be used for poker, why not tone the CPU down ever so slightly; save cash with a barely noticeable drop in speed.

Get the E6420 instead of the E6600.

Thank you for pointing this out, I didn't notice there was an E6420, I just saw the E6400 and didn't want to sacrifice half of the cache.

I agree the CPU should be toned down. In fact, the E6420 may have newer stepping which may overclock to higher speeds than the E6600, though you'd have to check to be sure. But certainly the E6420 would be about as fast if not necessarily faster. Heck, you might even consider the E4300 considering the price difference.

Did you see that Fry's B&M has a Thermaltake PurePower 500W for $35 AR? Or you could wait until the Ultra 500W or 600W goes on sale at Fry's online.
