I decided on these components.

AMD Opteron 1210 (gonna OC to 3.0ghz)
Foxconn 590 SLI
Scythe Infinity HSF
Lite-On SATA DVD-RW drive
Raidmax Katana case
Corsair XMS2 2GB DDR2-800
Mushkin 550 watt PSU
Seagate 250GB 7200.10 HDD
Razer Diamondback mouse
Logitech office keyboard (I don't need a fancy keyboard)
eVGA GeForce 8600 Ultra
Logitech X-530 speakers

Comes out to around $1300 without MIR

Opinions?

Nope cuz it's not out yet. It's being released at CeBit 2007

Otherwise I would have a link.

If at all possible (if my parents allow me to spend more) I'll go for an Abit QuadGT and a C2D E6600 and a 8600 Ultra.

You should definitley get a Core 2 Duo, you'll get a MUCH better OC. And stick with a 965P chipset.

I have stood by AMD for years, but if I go with Core 2 Duo it'll be my first Intel powered PC in 3+ years

opteron - inferior
mushkin psu - inferior
7200.10 - can be very loud
8600 - why not wait until it comes out to decide?

Join the club, C2D is just that good! Alot of old time AMD fanbois have gone over to the dark side, myself included.

20+% faster clock for clock than X2/opty and even the entry level $187 E6300 can overclock easily to 3.2+ghz on air cooling, or even higher with a good mobo and ram. With the higher multi chips and some exotic cooling 4+ghz is fairly easy. Can't ignore the numbers, Intels 65nm chips beat AMD's current chips in every way including power consumption.

I agree with pretty much everything so far. It's pointless to go AMD unless you like to pay a lot of money for lesser performance. Go C2D on a P965 board. The Mushkin PSU is also not very good.

e6300 $190
Gigabyte S3 $120
Corsair DDR2-800 (4-4-4-12; which you had selected) $205 after rebate
TOTAL=$515
I'd work off something like that as a base

Here are some alternative PSUs
FSP 500W $75
Silverstone 500W $100
Silverstone 560W (if you think you need that much power) $105
The Corsair 520W listed above is a great PSU (I just didn't feel like looking for it) and you cannot go wrong with it, just shop around for a good price on one.

If you're going to o/c anyway, just get an e6300 or e6400 then you won't have to ask for a ton of extra money. Also, if you want a more expensive board than listed above, you can look at the DS3 or P5B-Deluxe and save a bit more money that way (over the Quad GT). Basically comes down to what you can spend.

I'll work with these for a base and see what I can get:
E6300
Biostar T965P
Corsair DDR2-800

And prolly the Corsair 520W PSU or an OCZ 600W GameXStream

Well I cleared my newegg cart and re-added everything and it ended up cheaper so I am gonna go with everything listed in post #1 but I am gonna get these:

Core 2 Duo E6600 or E6300
Biostar T-Force P965
Antec NeoHe 550W PSU or OCZ GameXStream 600W
and maybe some Patriot DDR2-800 with D9's

Go with the Corsair 520W PSU instead. If the GXS has ripple like the 700W version does, then your parts will slowly be killed. Its hard to find ram that will definately come with the micron ic's, but good luck. With the recent price drop, I don't think the patriots have microns in them, but I may be wrong. Here's the ramlist: http://ramlist.ath.cx/ddr2/

They also have Elpidas, lol... so how do you know which one you get before you buy it? Easy... you don't.
