well its been about 3.5 years since my last build. just need some help with whats good these days

Current Comp:
AMD 64 2800
Asus K8VSE Deluxe
Ati Radeon 9600 Pro
2x512mb 3200 crucial 8t ram
Antec Sonata II
Antec 380w PS(came with tower)
ViewSonic 19" Widescreen

New comp im looking to build is mid-upper range gaming platform.

Processor: E6600 or Q6600(give me some insight on what are the benefits and if its REALLY necessary)(no video editing)
Video Card: Undecided really. looking in the $250-300US range.
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L. not looking for intense overclock, maybe just a little bit. http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813128059
Ram: Crucial Ballistix 2GB(2x1GB). not really decided on this one either. recommend me something. again, no major overclock, maybe just a little.
Tower: Antec P180B. http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16811129017
PS: Corsair(heard good stuff about them) either 520w, 550w, or 620w. or recommend me a silent but equally as good PS.
Monitor: Westinghouse 24". http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16824255001

comment and critique this rig. what you'd change, bad experience with a product, etc.
also some of them are on sale right now(MIR) so if theres something that is worth waiting for or something i should get NOW, tell me please.

thanks.

There's no reason to get an E6600 now. You can get the E6550 2.33 Ghz for ~175, or the E6750 2.66 GHz for ~195. If you want quad-core, the Q6600 is a good buy.

In the $250-300 video card range you're looking at an NVIDIA 8800GT, but it wouldn't hurt to wait a week and see what happens with ATI's 3850 and 3870.

For CPU, I would recommend a Q6600 or wait until Jan. 2008 for Penryns (since you won't be building until Dec. anyways). For your video card range, go for either 8800GT (on par with 8800GTX) or G92 based 8800GTS.

What is your price range?

I have a similar build as of a month ago, but I was upgrading from an even older system than yours. Same motherboard (DS3L), an E6750, 2GB of OCZ Ram, an Antec P182 (basically the same as the 180b), and a Corsair 520w PS. I wound up with a silent 8600gts which does fine for the games I play at 1680 x 1050. The system is wonderfully quiet, not silent, but quiet. System set up with a snap, and I put in a retail Windows Vista Home Premium on the install with a 500GB Seagate HD. I think the total cost for the parts mentioned above was around $900 (not including $60 in rebates, 40 of which I have received so far), plus another $239 for the Vista. Could have gotten Vista cheaper as an OEM, but went full price to finally get out of the OEM world (I know, lots of ways around that....). Install was a breeze, easiest I've ever done (not that I've done a lot). All parts are working great and I love the case.

Anyway, my next upgrade will be to wait for a future video card that can handle DX10 and be a silent cooling solution. You are in a good spot to either put in an 8800GT or either of the newer ATI parts that will hit the streets shortly. You might just be in the sweet spot for a build time.

price range is as low as reasonably possible for mid upper range gaming platform. as of right now, rebates are adding up to about 130. ill probably go with the 8800 GTS when the prices go down or the new ATIs if they perform.

I am thinking ofbuildinga system very much like yours. I can recommend, if you want to save some money, that you pickup the Soyo 24' screen from office max on black friday. They will have it for $250.

By the way, is it worth it to go quad core, and is it worth it to go to 4 gigs of RAM? I will also be running vista..

Alright your motherboard looks good, get that or an ABIT IP35-E. Both are good choices. Get either a E6750 or Q6600 quad. If you are willing to wait Penryn is available 1/08 but I am not sure which week of the month.

Your case looks good. For video card, get 8800GT which can be had for around $250 at Bestbuy with 10% or 12% coupon (if you are RZ member). Then you are good to go.

the MIR says that you need to Enclose a copy of the original sales receipt or packing slip dated. isn't there only 1 receipt for all ur items? can i make copies of these reciepts?

Yes you can.

Newegg will email you an invoice, just print it 3 times. Or you can view it on their site, and print it from there.

They would still honor the rebate, you have to request an RMA from the place of purchase.
Good luck with your build.

the thing is that im not finishing the build until maybe a month later. so RMA might be a problem.(30 days correct?)

You would still have the manufacturers waranty and would have to contact them directly but I don't see that being a problem, you bought GOOD stuff.
