new build issue

Im building a P4 3.0 with a gig of ram, 2 dvd drives and a 80g hd with 2 6800 vid cards. I tried using a not so nice 500 watt psu and it would turn off and shut off within 10 secs. then i bought a thermaltake 450 pure power which did the same. then i tried taking everyting out and putting it back together again and now it runs, but my monitor doesnt show that anything is on and my dvd drives dont respond as in the tray dont open like its not on. So i wanna know what else i can do. i dont know if i should try to go out and buy a 500 watt psu. Please help, thanks.

List the brands and models of all the components, in detail. If the computer is supposed to be a quality, reliable computer, then you might as well get a decent-quality power supply on order, too. How much (quality) wattage will be required will be easier to advise once you've given a spec list.

start over like this.... and you should probably easily find the problem...

take the parts out of the case, put the motherboard on a table with the anti-static bag under it.

start with just the cpu, 1 stick of ram, 1 video card, the PSU, and kb and mouse.... even a 350watt could run that little.

if it has any problem to start, switch to a different stick of ram and the other Vidcard.

add one component at a time untill the problem accures... then remove the last component you atached to it and make shur the problem goes away.... if so then you found your problem.

If the problem doesnt accure, then something was probably grounding out to the computer case.

straight from the beginning with just the cpu, board, memory, vid card it still wont boot. Then i did some reading around. My cpu box said that its a 04a and 04b compatibility, but my board says that its a 05a and a 05b compatibility for the cpu i dont know if that matters because ive done multiple builds and never ran into this problem. can anyone tell me if it matters really.right now im using a p4 3.0 cpu and a MSI p4n-sli board and a 512 corsair mem with a evga 6800 256 vid card. any help would most def help me out. been stuck on this all week

i called intel and that compatibility issue wasnt it. So now im really stuck. Im building another comp right now and its showing the same problem. both systems just wont boot. one comp is a p4 2.6gig with 1gig memory. The board is a intel sg-80. The other one is a p4 3.0 cpu and msi p4n-sli board and a 512 corsair mem and a evga 6800 256 vid card. i havent put anything else in besides that just to make sure it would boot but nothing is working. Damn when i do AMD builds i dont get problems like this. Its stumping me for a week already. HELP ME PLEASE!

Have you made sure you're supplying adequate power to the mobo? Are you getting an error codes (beeps)? Any lights flashing? Does just the board and RAM work?
