new build issues

picked up the parts for a new build on Dec02.
i7-8700k
MSI GTX1070ti Gaming 8G
MSI Z370 Gaming M5
Corsair RM650i
Corsair Graphite 230T case
Corsair LPX Vengeance 3200MHz 16G

the build went well but ran into some issues i could use some advice on. Going to be taking it back to the store today and would love to have proper info.

The first issue was the case (Corsair Graphite 230T) The stand offs for the mother board. There were nine of them and they lined up well with the motherboard BUT...when i was screwing it down i noticed the center stand off is just a pin. (middle row of standoffs right in center.) I took the motherboard out again to see if i have to remove this pin (the case came with 2 extra standoffs) but the pin did not look removable. Is this normal or a defect? I looked on line at the pix on the corsair web site and it looks to be a standoff in the pic.

The next problem is the power supply. (Corsair RM650i) The manual listed a 24 pin ATX cable. (20+4) BUT. the cable i got is a 24 pin on one end (solid no 20=4) the other end is a 28pin (20 + 8) this does not seem right.

the last one is a question about the graphics card (MSI gamer GTX1070ti) The card has a 8 pin and 6 pin connector for extra power. The question is with the power supply. It has a cable that has a 8 pin and a pig tail with a 6 pin. Can i use that to power the card? or do i have to use a separate 8 pin and 6 pin.

Hope i did not fry anything. i tried hooking it all up. (did not notice the ATX 24pin thing until i rechecked) The system did not start. At first it (like half a second) powered then was dead.

so going to take it back today and get them to fix it. They have a free set up a new system deal if you buy parts from them. (install parts and get it to post) going to demand that they get the system to post if the parts are defective.

thanks

1)It's been a while since I had my Corsair case, but I *think* that pin is removable. Just get yourself a pair of pliers and maybe some WD-40, grip and twist. If it is removable you should feel it give right away because it will be threaded on the bottom, but the top isn't.

2) The RM650i is modular, so the 20+8 goes into the PSU side. The 20+4 isn't solid, I think you're missing the snapaway on the connector. It's pretty small and tough to snap but I'm pretty sure it's there.

3) Yes you can use the 8 pin with the 6 pin pigtail on the GPU, there's nothing wrong with that.

ok thanks will ask at the computer shop. One other thing i forgot is the ATX 24 pin cable. There is one pin missing on the 24 pin connector and one pin from the 20+8 connector. but the missing pin is not in the same place i searched and looks like modern PS do not have this pin anymore (-5v) so maybe normal.

The ATX 24 connector is solid, i see no snap away 4 pin section.

I looked close at the center standoff (the pin) it did not look like it was removable. I considered trying pliers on it but if it wasnt removable i did not want the store to blame me for breaking it. All the other stand offs had what looked like a square nut fused into the case.
Motherboard is a MSI Z370 Gaming M5

i am going to ask if the store will consider the PS and case defective and to exchange them for something different.

well to update.
went to the computer store. Luckily the service desk was not busy so i could walk right up. Told them what concerns i had. They said the "missing" stand off is normal and not to worry.

Same for the strange ATX said it is normal for the Corsair PS i have. I said ok, I guess the manual that came with the PS that lists parts included. (a 24pin to 24pin ATX) is not worth much then. The tech plugged in the connector the way i had it before. He then switched on the PS toggle to on. See i say no power.

Now this is the funny part, he reaches over to front of case and hits the power button. Computer posts. All is well. LOL what a dummass (me). In my defense, On my "old" Asus Maximus VII - i7 4790k
system there are leds lit up even if the "power" is off. (ie PS is plugged in and switch is on but otherwise computer is off)

Just finished installing Windows 10 (they gave me Win10 pro for some reason). I did not get a dvd/bluray reader/writer this time around. Rarely used it so opted not to get one. Used the media creation tool to make a usb boot drive. Used the license key from the dvd to activate. Curses to MS for that stupid license key system. After i opened the package. There is that "scratch and win" type of thing you have to do to reveal the code. Took me 3 times to get it entered. The edge of the scratch part made it hard to read one letter. Tried G first. nope. Then Q. nope. Finally tried C and it worked.

Now to finish set up. go thru privacy settings. plug in the 2T WD black (Win10 pro is on a Adata SU800 512g SSD)

I bet after you left, they must have had a good laugh at your expense.

Don't feel too embarrassed, we all have our "dee-ta-dee" moments. I bet from now on when you build, you will be sure to double check that portion of the build.
