New build, new problems XD

Alright, one of my friends just got a bunch of new parts for christmas, basically everything but his Optical drive, hard drive, Graphics card, and PSU are new, he got the case, the Motherboard, and Processor new, they are listed below for specifics. but the problem is that, once everything is plugged in, upon pressing the power button, fans run, but the screen remains black. any ideas?

Apevia case... couldnt find model, apparently not sold anymore XD
Motherboard: AsRock 970 Extreme 3
Memory: 6GB (3x2GB strips) standard memory from HP (brand unknown)
Graphics Card: HIS AMD Radeon HD 7770
Processor: AMD FX 8350 8-core CPU
Hard Drive: Seagate (again, no specifics )

First of all, you have to find out the specific model of DRAM used. Not all sticks of DDR3 DRAM are compatible with all motherboards, and it is very easy to get an incompatible set of modules.

Next, go back to basics. Remove everything except the video card, CPU/cooler, and one single stick of DRAM. Make sure the case speaker is connected to the motherboard speaker header. Re-seat all the PSU power cables, especially the motherboard and CPU cables. Also, make sure you have the required 6 pin power connectors plugged in to the video card.

With the machine turned off, reset the CMOS memory. Make sure the video card is properly connected to the monitor, then try to boot the system.

Do you get any response? If not, do you get any beep codes?

Actually, Thanks a LOT!! i already had the speaker connected.. it returned 2 beeps! MEMORY! im sure that you are right.. thanks for the response, I alse tried Cmos reset, no good, and reconnecting everything, thanks a lot, he is gonna go get more memory tomorrow..

You didn't mention the power supply model - if he is recycling one from a prior build, make sure it has enough capacity to support the new video card and hardware.

The best option for memory is to purchase known compatible memory modules as listed on the ASrock support website for the motherboard (he can print the page and use it to cross-reference the purchased modules in the store -- the following links reference both the 970 Extreme 3 and the 970 Extreme 3 R2.0 which are separate products, so make sure he knows exactly which motherboard revision he actually has):

Second best option is to go to the memory manufacturer of choice's website and print out a list of all listed compatible modules for his ASrock motherboard. It won't be as accurate as the first option, as the memory manufacturers list compatibility based upon specs and not necessarily tested compatibility, but it is definitely better than trial and error...

Quick question, will this board support the CPU? i just had someone tell me that the chipset on the ASrock 970 will not support the new architecture of the 83xx series, and would require either a BIOS flash or another board, and neither is possible ATM, so is the Board stock compatible? he wishes to find out B4 buying memory. Thanks.

According to Asrock, it supports 8-core CPU's... now whether or not that is the Bulldozer line (8120/8150) or the Piledriver line (8320/8350) is to be determined. I would think at the very worst, it would still post but would display 'CPU Unsupported' when showing what CPU you have during RAM count.

I'm thinking RAM too...

This is right, it should still be POST'ing but it is not, might be ram then.. i will tell him that you said that.

The ASrock website shows the motherboard supports the FD8350FRW8KHK CPU, which is the FX-8350 Piledriver-based CPU at revision C0. It does require BIOS version# P1.50, though.

sorry i did not reply, it was a success!!! we ordered the ram (Gskill sniper 1600Mhz 1.25v low voltage) and upon putting this ram and all of the parts onto the board, it went off with a success, no BIOS update needed (already updated) and fully operational. Thanks for the help everyone.
