New build-Odd stability Issues

Hi, long time lurker here. Last time I posted I also had issues with a new build.

I put together a build a few weeks ago, and I am experiencing random BSODs, as well as sudden powering off with no BSOD or error messages (as far as I can tell) in Event Viewer. All drivers are updated, BIOS is updated. I tested the RAM with Memtest86. No errors. I pulled out the graphics card. Still crashed. I replaced the motherboard. Still crashed. Used another PSU. Still crashed.

The crash address for the BSODs are
ntoskrnl.exe+198560 Caused By Driver : SophosED.sys
Crash Address : nvlddmkm.sys+23ab3 Caused By Driver : nvlddmkm.sys
Caused By Address : ntoskrnl.exe+198560 Caused By Driver : ntoskrnl.exe

Recently, I am experiencing more of the random, sudden power offs than BSODs. I feel like I may be missing something simple, but I am really at a loss here. Everything is set to Auto in the BIOS, no overclocking settings at all.

Here are the specs:
Intel 8700k (stock fan pulled from i8300)
GIGABYTE H370M D3H
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400
Samsung EVO 860 M.2 NVME 500GB
EVGA SuperNOVA 550 G3 80 PLUS GOLD
CoolerMaster MasterBox 5

Thanks!

What do your cpu temps look like? My guess is the stock fan from the i3 can't handle a 95W processor.

Grrr... Was thinking it was something stupid like that. What is the best way to monitor it that tracks the temp, so I could see what it was after it reboots.

Download and run Intel Extreme Utility to see your temps.

I can tell you without a doubt that a stock i3 Intel cooler can't properly cool 8700k. Those heatsinks are all aluminum, and should not be used with your CPU (especially when putting any load on it).

A throttling CPU generally goes unnoticed, though. I doubt throttling is causing any errors.

You can use Intel's XTU and monitor the temps while running the stress test.

Ok. Silly me then. What cooler do you recommend I get?

I like Noctua products, like the NH-U14S or NH-U12S. However, I realize some people don't want to spend that much, so even a budget cooler like the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO would work.

In fact, just about any after-market cooler that is rated for a 95w TDP CPU would work so much better than that little stock aluminum heatsink.

Thanks. So far stock temps at idle were about 30 Celsius. Running Intel XTU CPU stress test. So far, 5 minutes in, temperatures are hovering at about 74 Celsius.

ETA: Ran a 1 hour CPU Stress test from within Intel XTU. Passed. Temps never reached more than 75 Celsius.

Also when it just turned off randomly before, Prime95 didn't throw any errors either, it just continued where it left off.

ETA #2: Running Prime95 for two hours. Reached 90 Celsius for a few seconds and then cooled down to 75 Celsius immediately. This happened only a couple of times. Fan doesn't seem to be spinning too loudly either. So far no crashing since I installed Intel XTU to monitor the temperature.

Typically you notice thermal throttling by your computer slowing down, or through lower than expected benchmark scores.

You don't typically get crashes from thermal throttling.

You typically just get a slower computer.

Having said that, you still want to get a better cooler than the 65W one you have now.

If you want to stay with a stock looking cooler that mounts exactly the same way, you can get the Intel BX TS15A:

Yeah, I'll get a new cooler, but so far temps seem to be OK. So we'll have to consider other possibilities. Thanks for all the help guys! I am at a loss here.

Sophos? Is that your anti-virus? Maybe try the default Windows one instead?

I have that installed on literally hundreds of computers and have experienced literally zero issues. Also, that was only one BSOD and I haven't gotten that message for weeks. More likely to get generic memory management BSODs etc. and more recently, almost entirely, sudden power offs with no error reporting.

I'll check tomorrow. Thanks!
It's GPT. I guess next step is to just reimage it and hope that it was some odd windows corruption? I had Prime95 run overnight and it was off again this morning. However no BSODs or errors within Prime95. It turned off after 4 hours. No errors in Event Viewer, only thing it said about that time (Prime95 says the time it ran it each subtest) that it turned off were two events, one entering sleep mode, and a few seconds later, leaving sleep mode. Then I guessed it turned off because there were no more logs until this morning.

You're running Prime95 overnight with that stock 65w TDP Intel cooler?

Not something I would ever do. Maybe your system is suddenly powering down to prevent heat damage.

I checked it constantly throughout the first 3 hours of the the 4 hours it ran. Was consistently hovering around 74-75 Celsius. The most it ever got was not more than a couple of momentary spikes to 90 Celsius, and then it dropped right back to 75 Celsius. So I wouldn't say it was overheating.

But that heat would build up, so if you were see "momentary spikes to 90 degrees", that is way too hot.

But it's your PC, so good luck.

It was only a couple of times, and literally for a second. Isn't 100 Celsius still in the normal operating temps for this chip under 100% load? I ordered a new fan, but from what I could tell this doesn't seem like an overheating issue.

100c will be the throttle temperature. You don't want that to come into play at all. I personally would not accept 90c spikes. They are unlikely to do any harm as long as you have described them accurately.
Make sure you have the throttling markers enabled in XTU to see if you get any throttling. There are a few different kinds of throttling other than thermal and XTU will show you if any of them are happening.

There was one time that it was showing throttled by power draw. But that was only once. And don't forget, all this was whole running Prime95.

In any case, I ordered a new fan and will install that tomorrow, so that will help for the temps.

Could it be that there is a bug related to sleep mode?

Sounds good.

Are you using the AVX offset in BIOS? That will lower your CPU clock during AVX loads like Prime 95, to keep temps down.
AVX loads are very hard on the CPU and they generally produce higher temps than you will ever see outside of AVX loads.

Ok. I changed the fan on Friday. Temperatures dropped to 51C on 100% load, however I'm still having weird issues. It seems to randomly decide to go to sleep even when running on full throttle (Prime95). It's set to go to sleep after 30 minutes, yet it goes to sleep even under load, and it does so at random times, so it's not like it decides that running Prime95 is considered idle.

If it's only happening under load, you should check VRM temps, if not then I have no idea.
