Ok. I changed the fan on Friday. Temperatures dropped to 51C on 100% load, however I'm still having weird issues. It seems to randomly decide to go to sleep even when running on full throttle (Prime95). It's set to go to sleep after 30 minutes, yet it goes to sleep even under load, and it does so at random times, so it's not like it decides that running Prime95 is considered idle.

Are you running the latest BIOS for your board? It might seem basic, but such weird behaviour can be caused by a wonky bios.

Do you by any chance have a dedicated sleep button on your keyboard? Check if its stuck or perhaps has issues. Weird stuff like that can happen...

Try restoring the power plans to defaults.

Certainly doesn't hurt trying. Could be a corrupted power plan.

I have the latest BIOS, but I will reflash it, maybe it wasn't flashed well, and is corrupted or something. No dedicated sleep button. Happens on idle, too. Power plan, you mean in Windows? I did a clean install yesterday, and it is still happening, so it doesn't sound like that.

Before you reflash, first try and load bios defaults. Might be some setting wasn't updated during flashing.

Yes, the option to reset power plan to default values is within advanced options(?). Can't check what its called, as I'm currently on a non-english Windows install. But since you've reinstalled, it seems unlikely.

Does anything happen with an alternate OS? Like a linux boot cd?

You might try contacting Gigabyte if they're aware of anything. Or perhaps can help you with a beta bios.

Thanks! I actually flashed already, but I loaded the BIOS defaults, too after I flashed it, just in case it kept some settings. I flashed it with Qflash in the BIOS.

So far, no power offs, but it does go to sleep every 30 minutes (default sleep time) after not moving the mouse. Thing is, it's running Prime95 the whole time and running at 100%. Is that really considered idle for an I7 8700k?

just disable sleep. Change it back after done running Prime95. "Problem" solved.

It's what I do with my machines when they are doing Folding@Home work.

This may sound silly, but is it possibly just your monitor that's going to sleep via it's own timer?

Nope, it's the machine, power light is off, GPU lights are off, etc.

Lol. The only reason I am running Prime95 is to just to load it to make sure there are no issues. I don't care if it goes to sleep if that's the intended design. But, I don't think it's supposed to do that.

Try something like listening to music in Windows Media Player. If it still powers down at 30 minutes, there is an issue (or incorrect setting). Basing a problem on it going to sleep while running one program isn't enough to know.

Regardless of my sleep settings, my PC never goes to sleep while listening to music.

Good idea. Will do and report back.

So, it went to sleep while playing music with WMP, too. It appears falling asleep with music works for computers, too... It's really strange this whole thing.

A quick google search on nvlddmkm.sys seems to suggest it is an Nvidia driver issue. Uninstall and reinstall the drivers I guess, the clean install option.

The drivers are the least of my issues.

I disabled sleep and it's happily plugging away prime numbers for the last 6 hours, so there's something up with the sleep on this PC.

What OS are you running? Sorry if I missed it.

If you are running 8.1 or above, and this is occurring on multiple installs, I would contact Gigabyte. It reminds me of something on the board overheating, or a bad part of the board going south once it heats up.

Forgot to update this thread months ago....

It was the RAM causing all this issues in the end. Even though MemTestx86 gave it a clean pass, switching out the RAM resolved all the issues. RMA's the RAM.
