Hi, I'm building a new computer for the first time and was seeking any comments/suggestions/advice regarding my build.

Coolermaster CM 690 case
OCZ GameXstream 600W psu
Abit IP35 Pro motherboard
Intel Q6600 B3 cpu/Scythe Infinity HSF
Crucial Ballistix 2x1gb pc2-8500
Evga Geforce 8800GT
3x120mm Yate Loon Case fans
Saitek KB + Logitech G5 mouse
160GB + 40GB ATA133 Harddrives (Will be switching to 7200.11 SATAII when prices lower a little)
I'll also be using by old CDRW drive and floppy (eww they are beige, don't match my case)
Acer 19" WS 1440x900 monitor

Can someone recommend me a good Dual Layer DVD writer, preferably under $30.
What is the best way to apply AS5 on Q6600? A small dab, or thin line over the two cores?
Anything that I may have overlooked? Parts are ordered, just waiting for pickup/delivery.
Help is appreciated.

compactdisc,

Welcome to thre forum.

Looks like a pretty good complement of components to me! Just make sure the Crucial memory you picked is compatible with that Abit mobo. Go to the Abit site and see if you can find that mobo and what memory is on their QVL (Qualified Vendors List). I suspect it's fine, but won't hurt to check before you buy and build then find you have a problem...

I just bought SATA DVD drives and like them a lot - about $35 each plus S&H, but here are some Samsung PATA drives that are $35 incl S&H: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16827151155 Samsung is a good burner. Here is mine: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16827151153

Also, you are correct about about a stripe of AS5 down the cores on the Q6600. Go to the Arctic web site and verify it...

Agree with MarcVenice. Absolutely no point getting the B3. The SLACR G0 uses less power and creates less heat.

The Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120, Thermalright Ultra 120 or Tuniq Tower 120 will all provide better cooling than the Scythe HS.

The Arctic MX-2 thermal paste outperforms the AS5.

And if you're buying those hdds consider getting the 250GB 7200.10 SATA 3 instead.

pc2-8500 why ? PSU, meh ... Why a B3 stepping ? Rest looks good to me ...

i actually bought my system locally and i spent $500 for the q6600 with the lapped infinity hsf, ip35 pro, ballistix pc2-8500, ocz 600watt, 3x120mm yate loons and the AS5 tube. If I were to buy all this at retail, it would've cost me well over $700 CDN (yes these are canadian prices, american prices are lower than what we get here).

I was hoping to use the B3 till the penryns come out, then sell my Q6600 and upgrade in January. Looks like i'll have to wait till april for that now (penryn quads delayed).

I already have those hdds, waiting for the price on the 7200.11 to drop to around $115 before tax. I can't upgrade very often, my current system is 6 years old (don't even ask for the hardware specs)

WOH! Great deal you got there. I suppose if you bought them locally, you don't really have an option to change the parts, but that's a good looking list of components.

Where the "two cores" are located?

i meant over both of the die(s) - you know what i mean, two Conroes under one IHS
"or thin line over the two dies?"

Ok, where are the two dies located for the thin line?

compactdisc,

Blain,

If you go to the Arctic Silver site I gave you above and click on the dot next to the quad picture at the bottom of the page, you'll get a pdf file that shows you the cores and how the paste should be laid over them...
