New build problem

But no beeps, and not a lot else. If I remove the memory and restart then still no beeps. That leads me to think bad CPU or mobo. Is that right? I think the CPU is seated correctly.

This sounds more like a motherboard issue, this is assuming you plugged the Speaker in properly so it does in fact give beeps. If there is a problem with the cpu the motherboard will start to beep, There are many cases I have seen a failed motherboard in which it will not beep, the majority of these times are related to lightning strikes or power surges.

There might also be bad/no power to the motherboard - are any of the fans that spin up powered by the motherboard (ala most basic CPU fans?) If there's one connected to the motherboard that doesn't spin up when the rest do, it's likely either a dead mobo or bad power to the mobo.

And as Zyfer mentioned, double check all your connections, starting with the case speaker, if there's not one on the motherboard itself (it'd be a 5/8"-ish tall black plastic cylinder, about 1/2" diameter with a 1/8" hole in the top - if it's there at all).

Thanks - speaker cable was plugged in correctly - the mobo was the only thing I didn't have a spare of, so I haven't checked yet, but it sounds like it

If you've verified your power and speaker connections, and get nothing on POST, it's likely a bad mobo.

i think i am having similar problems... i am trying to build a comp for my mom and when i hooked up my nforce2/cpu and everything together all i got was the cpu fan turning on and off, case fans running normally and the hard drive clicking but not accessing. i switched ps and same.

finally i thought it was either the mb or cpu so bought a 40$ can asper mb and i have same problems - also i switched hard drives to make sure it wasnt a factor.

i havent tried changing the vid card since i did get a black screen but no boot and i cant easily get to my card i am using now - also changed memory.

i am buying a cheap sepron this week and hoping this is the problem but i know everythign worked previously and i carefully removed everything originally. sucks

also no beeps and speakers plugged in correctly - tried both sides.

no cost comp for my mom is now costing me
