I have just put together a computer for a friend and am having some problems with it. When i was installing windows it restarted on me. Ended up getting windows installed then it restarted again. This time i went into the bios and the 5v looked to low(was red) Then it shut off again. It also said power surge detected last time when the comp started. Is there anything else that this could be other then the power supply? What is the best way to troubleshoot something like this?......kinda scared to try to turn it on again. Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks

Only have the one in the comp i have now and one that i think wouldnt be enough power. Its a themaltake tr2 430(also in a computer). Do you think a 430 would be enough for this system. Any other thoughts?

This site says i only need 312W. Is this a reputable site? Just want to know if i should go through the trouble of taking apart the computer with the 430

PSU calculators are bunk, don't trust them. You're better off adding up the real power draws of individual components yourself. Or find real world measurements of similar systems.

At any rate, yes your 430W would be plenty for the system in the OP.

While that's always true, the PSU calculator he linked to is one of the better ones...IMO, it's pretty close as long as the user is accurate with the input for hardware.

I'd be surprised if a relatively new Corsair CX600 couldn't handle the load of that system. It SHOULD run fine with about 400 watts.
