Built computer, posted ok so installed Vista64. Lots of problems with freezing up and graphical corruption during memory benchmarks w/ Sisoft Sandra. Both dimms failed memtest86+, dual and singly, in every slot. These dimms seem to typically require a lot of tweaking to run stably at 1066, but after trying every possible setting from OCZ support they still failed every time so RMA'd.
New dimms finally arrived. BSODS and crashes when used dual. Dimm #1 seems to work flawlessly when in slot 3 alone, passes memtest and completes all benchmarks (benchmarks slow but I won't even worry about that now). Dimm#1 appears to fail in all other slots. Dimm#2 fails completely in every slot: fails memtest, BSODS when trying to load windows, windows fails because "kernel is missing" etc.
This is my 4th system build over the years but I seem to be out of my depth. How can I determine if its faulty ram (again!), bad memory controller on mobo, something else? (CPU? PSU?)? I don't have another compatible system to swap parts out or test. The crucial fact seems to me that dimm #1 seems to consistently work in slot 3 with regular timings, while nothing else works even with slower timings etc. My thinking is that if dimm #1 is proven good in slot 3 then it must be bad mobo, maybe mobo and dimm #2 are both bad? Although neither of the two previous dimm's I RMA'd could pass memtest or work consistently in slot 3, could OCZ quality control suck that bad? I am really po'd with paying shipping on RMA's, I know that, I never had this kind of trouble or needed to RMA before. Can anyone suggest next steps?
Also, the two previous dimms both failed even when set at 800mhz with all else auto. I haven't tried these two singly at 800, but they both failed at 800 when used dual channel.
