I have just recently put together a new rig with these parts

Intel Core i5-2500K
ASUS P8P67 PRO
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB)
EVGA GeForce GTX 570
OCZ Vertex 2 60GB
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB

And have almost from the get go been experiencing freezes at random times. It can happen when the comp is just sitting idle, or playing games, surfing the net etc.. there is no pattern to it.

When it happens the computer will hard lock, and becomes totally unresponsive forcing me to hard boot. There is no blue screen or error msg that accompanies these crashes, and I am at a loss as to what could be causing it.

The system is not overclocked at all, and I have run memtest with no issues at all. As well Video drivers are up to date so I am not sure where to go from here.

Does anybody have any ideas what I could do to begin to troubleshoot??

Power down, Clear cmos and boot...Get into bios and make sure you set the bios up to specs. Like PCI-E, X32 or X64 os ( whichever your running), ram to specs that match the ripjaws. you get the picture... then, reboot and press f8, when the screen with multiple ways to get into windows, use "last good configuration that worked". Give this a shot...........

What wattage and model of power supply are you using? What operating system?

My GIGABYTE GA-H67A-UD3H-B3 was doing the same thing. Turned out to be the G.SKILL Ripjaws F3-10666CL7D-8GBRH.
I replaced it with G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series F3-10666CL7D-8GBXH and it never did it again.

I believe RAM to have been the culprit behind the random freezes.

In the bios the memory was running at a lower speed than it was supposed, so I changed it to the speed it was marketed at and everything has worked fine since. I am crossing my fingers that this problem will not resurface.

Thank you AnandTech.. I find the community here friendly and helpful, and love the time that I spend here.

I am having the same issue:

Intel i5-2500K
GIGABYTE GA-P67A-UD4-B3
HIS AMD HD6870
CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W
Gskill Ripjaws 1600 2x4GB (The one "optimized" for P67A)
Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB

Freezes the same way it did for the OP.

Seems to crash when I am downloading something. It crashed frequently when I was downloading Starcraft 2 and League of Legends. It has never crashed when I've downloaded from Steam (Dragon Age 2 and Shogun 2). Also never crashed in the 30+ hours of gaming I've done on this system. Memtest86+ did 3 passes on the RAM and found no errors. The RAM settings in BIOS are correct. I stress tested the machine using Prime95, system temperatures were fine and no crashes.

I can't figure out what in the world is causing this.

The Sandy Bridge processors TECHNICALLY don't use 1600 speed RAM...which is why the BIOS sets the speed at 1333. When you enable XMP, you're overclocking your RAM, and will need to make changes to your processor speed as well...

mrmitra, since your crashes seem to only occur while downloading, try reinstalling your LAN drivers and see if that helps. Download them directly from Gigabyte.
