I am needing to upgrade my PC. I use it to process and record security video at my home. I use a software called sighthound video. I have 27 cameras recording 24/7. My current system runs a very high CPU load(90% or more). The motherboard died on my current system, so now is a good time to upgrade.

My current system is :
Gigabyte B460M DS3H motherboard
i7-10700k CPU
32GB of Crucial DDR4 2666 memory

I would like.to.stay in the $500 range for a new board, cou, and memory. I can reuse the rest of the items I have.

Any suggestions?

I'd check in with the software vendor to see if they have a CPU recommendation.
Are you in the U.S. near a Micro Center? I favor AMD these days, but in your case, it could make sense to try to get more cores and Intel has cheaper cores at this time.

Usually, Micro Center has discounted bundles but you have to take their specific choices. Currently, you can sort of assemble your own bundle and walk away with a better motherboard:

I have no micro center anywhere close. I have to order everything I get online. Southern Illinois

And the software vendor has not updated since 2021. They just list that to reduce CPU load is to have at least 1 core for 2 cameras. And to reduce frame rate of the cameras.

I was told they are moving to.open source.

If you're looking to reuse a bunch of parts, you could opt for an Alder Lake system and then you could reuse your DDR4 to save some cost, as part of your part recycling. But I couldn't say how much better that would be for your particular use case.

One other thought: does the software have some support for GPU assisted encoding? If so, you could use your current parts (with a new board) and just add a GPU. Maybe it would take some of the load off the CPU.

Is the current CPU load causing issues beyond high utilization? Dropping frames or making it impossible to do other tasks?

The software won't use a GPU to encode. And the system does slow to where you are not able to do other things at times. I'm thinking of just reusing the case, drives, ext. Just replace the MB, CPU, and RAM.

Glanced at their web site earlier. They are really hyping up AI in the cloud. No Intel Quick Sync support, maybe some GPU offloading. So my best guess is for $500 or less, they will like the extra E cores of an i9-12900K.

I'm not qualified to say whether you should avoid Intel 13th and 14th gen at this time, but it's certainly something to consider:

I may just find a exact replacement board and leave it run like it is. See where it goes from there

If it's cores you need maybe consider the AMD 5950X (16 core) or 5900X (12 core). You can still use your DDR4 so you only need the CPU and motherboard.
