1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
Gaming (FPS like CS:GO and BF 1) & general web surf
2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread
$700-800 max
3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.
USA
4. IF you're buying parts OUTSIDE the US, please post a link to the vendor you'll be buying from.
We can't be expected to scour the internet on your behalf, chasing down deals in your specific country... Again, help us, help YOU.
N/A
5. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.
None
6. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
Case, SSD, HD
7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
Nah
8. What resolution, not monitor size, will you be using?
1080p
9. WHEN do you plan to build it?
Note that it is usually not cost or time effective to choose your build more than a month before you actually plan to be using it.
Soon but might wait til Cyber Monday to get sales

Let me start this off by saying that I have a $500 gift card to Amazon, so all parts will be bought from there first, then anything over $500 will be from newegg. I'm trying to see if I can get the $500 Amazon exchanged for newegg, but as of this first post, assume Amazon purchase.

I was thinking of basically using the Low End build listed in the sticky, but going up to 16GB of RAM, and going with a GTX 1060 instead of the 950. Also included in the budget price is a new monitor. Currently have a 60hz Acer 23'' monitor, (no clue panel type) that I want to replace with something better. I'd like a 27'' 144hz display, so please recommend one. Leaning toward Acer GC276HL which is a 144hz IPS display with 1080p res. To bump up to 1440p, would cost about double.. which I think is overkill.

List right now:
CPU - i3 6100
GPU - EVGA GTX 1060
Case - Reused
PSU - EVGA 500 W1
RAM - Crucial 2x8GB DDR4 2133 MT/s
Mobo - Gigabyte H110M-A
SSD - Reused
HD - Reused but might buy another later

Subtotal: $441.43

Not bad that you get this under $500. Which 1060? They have them with 3GB and 6GB memory configs.

the 3GB version. I figured it was worth the savings because BF1 suggests 3gb of VRAM and I know for sure CS:GO doesn't use that much.

The 1050 Ti w/ 4GB of memory will be out in about two weeks. You may want to consider getting that instead as it will be cheaper.

Cheaper but performance wise, what are we talking here? If I go with the parts I've picked here plus that Acer monitor, I come in $621.42 so I guess I can afford to spend a bit more here. I could even splurge for an i5 if it really made much of a difference in gaming over the i3.

From what I've heard it will be close to the performance of the 1060 3GB model. The extra GB of memory might be helpful with newer games as well.

I assume you have a Window's license?? Also, how big is your SSD? Some modern games are 50gb or more. As far a gpu goes, I would definitely wait for the 1050Ti to see its price/performance, but I think it will be considerably slower than either of the 1060s or the 470/480 from AMD.

Would get the 470 8Gb, more future proof!
Also try finding the B150 Hyper, that one can overclock your CPU.

I can wait the two weeks to find out.

Yes, and it's ~256GB, only used for the OS and programs which are accessed often, such as games.

I'll wait and see what the benches are showing in a few weeks.

Wha? Oc my CPU? I had put in the i3, non K version... it's not overclock capable. Even if I were to go i5 I'd still get a non K version. I don't really dabble in overclocking any more.

You know z1ggy, 256 GB isn't all that much storage for games these days. Hell the 1 TB SSD I'm using for games is about 2/3 full.

I know but I can always just add another one later on. I just got this SSD probably.... 6-12 months ago, so it's not very full. I'd say in the last 36 months, I've played only 5 different games on the PC.

So I was thinking... Since I end up now keeping PC's for so long, I might as well invest in a quadcore CPU. The k version of the i5 6600k is only 30 bucks more than the 6500, I might as well just get that for the extra computing power. However, with the monitor, this puts me well over my max budget of $800.

I guess it comes down to the two below:

Build 1 - future proofing, High Perf
i5 6600k
ASUS z170-A
16GB RAM
Cooler Master 612 (could skip until OC)
EVGA 500 W1
GTX 1060 3GB/1050Ti
Acer GN276HL

~$1220

Build 2 - Budget friendly, medium Perf
i3 6100
Gigabyte H110
8GB RAM
EVGA 500 W1
GTX 1060 3GB/1050Ti
Acer GN276HL

~$920

Do you guys think it's worth an extra $300 in my case for essentially just extra clocks? From the benches on gaming between i3 and i5, right now it looks like there's not a huge difference. I know for a fact in CS:GO it won't make a difference, but for BF 1 and maybe some fancier FPS 2-3 years from now, it could

Don't forget with Intel K CPUs you will also need to buy a HSF as they are not bundled with them. Personally I think you will be fine with the i5-6500 and you could save some money by going with a H170 motherboard instead of a Z170 one.

That's why I included the CM 612...

Yes going that route will save me about $130 and probably not make much of a noticeable difference in any games right now, that seems to be a decent path to follow.

K I think I have a final build. All parts are from Amazon, for now, unless I find it significantly cheaper somewhere else. I have a $500 giftcard so I'd use up all that money first.

CPU- i5 6500
Mobo - H110M
GPU - GTX 1070
PSU - EVGA 500 W1
RAM - 1x16GB Ballistix Sport LT
SSD - Reuse from current build
Case - Reuse from current build

Total = $775

Sounds like I can also get an XB270HU from a member here for a reduced price, so that would complete my build and as long as all parts hold up, should be solid for me for the next 5-6 years again. Might buy another SSD as I need more space.

Have my final list with all parts of the build, including peripherals. As I suspected, I couldn't help myself and absolutely blew my budget. I figure, holidays coming... Plus I got a few good deals. I have already acquired the monitor, but nothing else other than the parts I'm reusing. I have a copy of Windows 10 already to use.

Monitor - Acer Predator XB270HU (purchased from ATOT member for $420 Shipped)
Desk - Altra Dakota L Shaped Desk
Mouse Pad - Steel Series QcK Heavy
Mouse - Mionix Castor
Keyboard - G. Skill KM780R w/ Cherry Red's
PSU - EVGA SuperNova 550 G2
Mobo - Gigabyte H110M-S2H
GPU - EVGA GTX 1070 SC Gaming
CPU - i5-6500
RAM - Ballistix Sport LT 16gb Single Stick
Case - Reuse my HAF912
SSD - Reuse my EVO 500GB
Total Price = ~$1520

Originally wanted to spend no more than $800, lol.

Comments??

I would opt for a used 980 Ti for around $320.00, and put the savings toward an i7-6700k for better overall system performance.
Performance difference is a little in favor of the 1070 in most cases, plus uses a whopping 120W less under full load. I'd almost have to bump up my wattage on the PSU in order to use a 980Ti maxed out, to be safe.

It's something I could look into. I'd honestly at that point probably just keep the i5 and save the money. Using an i7 isn't really going to give me that much more performance in gaming, and I don't do much if any heavy computation would using an i7 would give me a lot of benefits.

Ah, good points. In that case the lower power draw of the i5 and 1070 is a good choice.

Update: Not patient, just placed the order. Also bought a Corsair Carbide Alpha Spec case to replace my HAF912 because I wanted a clear side panel, a little bit more room, and LED fans. Also, the GPU I selected was apparently too long for the case and could have hit the HDD cage.

I'll post some photos once it's all up and running, probably over the weekend or early next week.
