I finally got all the parts for the new build and nothing will post.

Asus a8n-sli premium
6600gt
corsair 512 ram (1gb total)
opteron 148

The system will power up, but will not get anything on the monitor. The only beeps I will get is when I remove all the ram. I get one long and two short beeps which means no ram present. If I removed the cpu or video card the system will turn on but no beeps. I tried one stick of ram in each of the memory slots, A1 and B1 and the system will sit there and nothing shows up on the monitor.

I called Asus and they said its one of three things, the board isn't grounded, the cpu is bad or the memory controller on the mb is bad. I can rule out the grounding since my old system used the old case and never had a problem for the past year. Can't test the cpu in another mb since everyone I know has intel or they don't have a 939 pin mb. I think its the board since if there is no cpu present I should be getting a beep but it doesn't happen. Any ideas?

UPDATE I went to best buy and bought a stick of PNY 2700, 256 MB. The computer actually boots up with the stick of PNY. The kicker is that I can also use the Corsair memory in the board at the same time. If I remove the PNY then it will not post. Anyone know why?

Try using only one stick of memory in slot A1. If you have other DDR RAM, try that as well.

This is why you should always try a test boot on a cardboard box or something else that isn't conductive. I'd recommend taking it out of the case and try again, just so we can start eliminating causes.

I have tried one stick of ram in different memory slots and no go, it just sits there and nothing will post. I tried each stick individually.

I haven't tried any other memory but the ram I have is approved on asus website for the sticks I have. It is odd that I am not getting the error beeps on the computer except for when the ram is removed and there should be an audio error message that comes thru the speakers saying what is wrong and nothing ever comes thru.

I also tried the boot out of the system on cardboard and exactly the same thing as if it is in the computer and I tried with and without cpu, ram and video card and all the combos and the same exact thing happens.

Should I send the mobo back and the ram or just the mobo?

but the ram could still be bad, and not the board.

but the board being bad is not out of the question, either. basically from here, id recommend swapping out parts you know are good for ones that you arent so sure about, and reseat everything to be double sure

Do you think both sticks of the ram would be bad? I am going to rma the mobo, should I get the rma through Newegg or thru Asus?

id just send the board back for now, and when u get your new one, if it still doesnt work, then send the memory back. or better yet, while your waiting for your new board, see if you can find a system to test your memory in, save some time.

Not a 100%, but with nothing in the board and just powering it I don't get any beeps out of it. It should give the no cpu found error code.
