new build won't post

When I power on, my fans spin up, my heatsink fan spins up just for a second, then everything shuts down.
Then it turns on for a second, then off for a couple seconds, then on... the process repeats. Never on for more than a second.
Pushing the power button on the case won't stop the process.
Switching off the power supply, I still get one more on-off (guess the MB still has some power) before it stops.
I tried reseating the processor and heat sink.
Any ideas?
I'm just trying to get it to power on.
I don't have a monitor hooked up because the onboard video is VGA and my LCD's are DVI and my video card isn't in it, but it should at least stay on.

My stuff is in my sig, I've got an ORB II, Q6600 G0.

Appreciate any help.
This is my third build and I never had a problem in the past. But I'm still a newb.

I am going to try it with the motherboard not screwed down to see if it could be a short circuit... but it's late, have to try that tomorrow.

Try booting with a single stick of RAM.

If that doesn't work, try the other stick.

And as soon as you can access BIOS, set the memory voltage to 2.2V, then timings and frequency to the Crucial's specs.

Good luck!

I tried lots of stuff, switching ram slots, switching ram, I even removed the whole motherboard and used a screwdriver on the power switch leads to turn it on and I get the same results.

I think it's my power supply. I tried it in my old computer and it just turns on for a second then off.

In my new computer, I found something weird, when I remove the 4 pin cpu 12v power cable, it will power my heatsink fan.

Also, my power supply turns on when I put a jumper wire in it to simulate how the motherboard turns it on, but I didn't check the 4 pin 12volt output. No way am I hooking my new quad core to it with it jumpered.

Seems to be something wrong with that 4 pin rail.

I'm picking up a new power supply from best buy tonight to try and I already have an RMA # for my corsair power supply. Just need this new power supply to confirm everything.
Hope it's the power supply as that would be the easiest to fix.

New builds always worries me that's why at times it's better to just buy a prefab system. Oh well if you got time and a few extra brain cells to kill building a new system is quite rewarding.

Yeah, but I actually find all this fun, it's part of the process. I enjoy a challenge. This is the third PC I've built and the only one that has given me real problems. I like picking out all the parts and being able to upgrade later on. Wish I could have upgraded my old PC, but everything was obsolete.

Sounds like what happened to my wife's pc recently. After I swapped out power supplies, it ran like a champ again.
If it's brand new, I'd RMA your power supply.

I had something along these lines happen when I tried to upgrade the PSU in my old computer (p4 2.4). Appearently the new 20+4 pin connectors (when used as just a 20 pin connector) on the PSU I bought were different than the old plain 20 pin connectors and the system never booted, fans just turned on and off a few times and then sat there. I would think any mobo that will run a q6600 would use the 24 pin connector, but if not then that could be the issue. Hope this helps.

Yeah, you are right. I borrowed one from best buy and it posted. I'm gonna keep borrowing it for 30 days until my Corsair comes back. I got an RMA #.

Yeah, I had to use the 20 pin connector when I tried it in my old pc, I also have a 2.4. The new MB is a 24 pin. Good thing to check nonetheless. Thanks. It seems like every 5 years they have to make everything obsolete!

My old PS, it won't work in my new pc, it's a 20 pin. My MB of course not compatible with 775 socket. My memory, totally different pin configuration, you can't even insert it in my motherboard. New video cards would not fit in my motherboard. I basically realised I needed an all new computer, couldn't upgrade anymore. This one will have to last me another 5 years. Tomorrow I think I'll donate my TI-4200 to the museum, it's served me well and lasted 5 years overclocked.
