New build

This is my new PC.

AMD FX 8350 Black Edition
Asus M5A99FX Pro R2.0
Corsair Vengeance 4GB 1600MHz
Zotac GT 730 1GB DDR5
Cooler Master K380 Mid Tower

I don't want to spend a lot of money on stuff I plan on replacing in a few months. I plan to get a better GPU, PSU and cooler at a later date. So I have three questions.

Is a 350W PSU enough for the current build?
I was thinking of buying the Cooler Master 350 Plus. Please recommend a different one if necessary.

Is the stock cooler enough for the processor?
I only plan to stream HD videos from my work website most of the time, like Netflix. I play a bit of Counterstrike GO as well. I don't plan on overclocking either the CPU or the GPU.

Is the Cooler Master K380 tower suited to carry larger GPUs like the GTX 980 or the R9 290X or should I spend a bit more on the CM HAF 912?

Thanks in advance.

It should work just fine for now. Probably pushing it though. Don't OC at all I don't think you plan to. And the stock cooler is just fine.

I would get least a 650 watt power supply. If you are looking at the GTX 980 or the R9 290x video cards. The GTX 980's I seen online says minimum 500W Power Supply. While a chart I looked at says recommended PSU for a R9 290X is 650 watts.

The Cooler Master 350 Plus really lacks the amps on the 12v+ rail. Both the GTX 980 and R9 290X would need more power then that PSU could dish out.

The following power supply below would be a good match. If you in fact looking at a GTX 980 or R9 290X video cards. It will push both videos without having any problems.

Even if it don't draw all that power it says it needs. I think it's good to have a little bit of head room on a PSU. Best part it has a five year warranty.

I bought a Corsair PSU five years ago. It came with a 7 year warranty and I still have 2 years of warranty left on it. I just built a FX 8320 with a MSI 970 Gaming board. Since I all ready had a nice power supply I used it. This is the 2nd computer this power supply has seen.

I think we're confused. What's the goal here?

If your PSU died and your goal is to keep limping along with your current setup while spending little-to-no money, 350W is OK.

If the goal is to get a PSU that will be useful when you get a new GPU and cooler, aim for 650W or better.

What country are you in and what's your PSU budget? Hopefully we can find a good one for you.

Thanks for the replies guys. It definitely helped.

My immediate goal is to get a low spec PC that I can upgrade after a few months when I have the dough for it.

I want to spend as little money as possible on the PSU, cooler and GPU. I am buying the entire thing on EMI, and I have exceeded the budget with just the CPU and Mobo.

I live in India. I'm paying 12-15% extra on EMI.

This is the cheapest option.

The second option, though I doubt it's worth the money as it is for short term use. But I don't want to end up wrecking the mobo and CPU because I wanted to save a few bucks.

The 550W and 650W Gold standard are 4x more in terms of cost. That's far beyond my budget today.

The plan is to soldier on with something that powers the CPU and the GT 730 for now and buy a really good PSU and cooler when the time comes to upgrade. Nvidia says the GT 730 needs a minimum of 300W, so I decided on getting one that's 50W higher.

I read that PSUs are outsourced for manufacturing to other companies and the quality may vary. So I want to be extra careful with the low end PSUs.

I think he means he's buying stuff on credit.

Wikipedia said:

"Equated Monthly Installment", a fixed payment owed each month on a property mortgage or other loan; another term for amortization

Can you return the CPU and Mobo? AMD is not the way to go to get a low spec PC that you can upgrade later. Ideally you'd get the best mobo you can that's useful to you, and a cheap Pentium or Celeron. Motherboards in order from worst to best are:

  • H*1 with 2 RAM slots
  • B*5 with 4 RAM slots (Probably the best cheap option if not overclocking)
  • H*7 with 4 RAM slots (Not a big upgrade from B*5, but has more SATA ports for drives)
  • Z*7 with 4 RAM slots (Required for overclocking or SLI or almost all types of Crossfire)

The "*" can be 6 or 7 for last-generation Intel, or 8 or 9 for Haswell, which actually isn't a huge upgrade over the last generation.

I kind of thought that too, but I didn't want to go off on a "never ever buy a computer on credit" without some confirmation.

OP, please don't buy a computer on credit unless you're using it for business purposes where there is a clear ROI.

Too late for that. And doesn't make sense considering I plan on buying the new GPU is 3 months. I don't want to buy the CPU and Mobo twice.

We don't get paid enough for a one-off purchase. Monthly payments is the way to go.

Anyway, thanks for all the help. I've decided to go for the Corsair VS350.

I would really look for a ps in the 500w range in order to have ample amps on the 12v rail and they aren't that expensive these days. A quality ps is an investment in everything that is attached to it so bear that in mind as you decide on a unit. My ps is overkill right now but a year ago I was running a dual loop water setup with two gtx480's in sli on x58.
