Decided to put together new build. Please let me know if you see something that obvious bad or not smart choose.
Q9650 3.0 no OC
XFX 9800GT no major gaming
Corsair 650W
Corsair XMS3 6GB
Gigabyte GA-EP45C-UD3R
Antec 900 Two
Samsung 22x SATA LightSribe
WD 2TB
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
Windows 7 64bit
build cost $1400

I know the processor and HD on extreme side, but this should last me 3-4 years.

Current setup (motherboard gave up)
E6600 OC to 3.0
XFX 7600GT
SeaSonic 430W
Corsair XMS2 8GB
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 (rev 3.3)
LIAN LI PC-A05B
Samsung 18x SATA LightSribe
WD 2x74GB Raptor in RAID1
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit

I wouldn't count on 3-4 years, but that depends on what you use it for. If you don't do anything too intensive you should be fine

I'd get a Q9550 though, $65 for not even 200mHz isn't really worth it imo

Agreed on the Q9550... but then again... if only your motherboard went bad... Why throw out an otherwise perfectly fine system? If you don't do much gaming then just get a new video card and you should be fine.

I'd wait a bit longer before buying a whole new system.

Epic fail - unclear on the concept or something? 6GB DDR3 kits are designed for i7 systems.

Which is what I recommend you build. For about $50 more than what you've got there, switch to an i7 920 + whichever mobo there's a good combo deal.

Yeah, why not get a decent replacement motherboard (P45?) that makes good use of your current parts, and allows you to drop in a graphics upgrade (or EOL S775 upgrade in 12-18 months)?

In your situation I see two options

1. Step up to I7

2. Upgrade to Q9650 and GA-EP45C-UD3R, add a 1TB drive, reuse the rest of your components.

Building a totally new S775 system makes less and less sense every day. You can get 98% of the performance of a new build s775 for what you do by just replacing mobo and CPU. The GPU can be upgraded at any time regardless of platform (but requires a PS upgrade) and you should make that decision based on the performance of the light gaming that you do.

If stepping up to I7 busts your budget, keep your current GPU for a couple months and stick the latest greatest card in when you've save some $'s and the card will likely be cheaper

To me the idea of building a box and not touching it for years has long since gone. Maintaining the best upgrade path is the most important thing in my book. And right now that is S1336,DDR3,PCI-E. Since you are already on the PCI-E GPU format, I wouldn't upgrade the GPU until it's not performing adequately in the games you play.

This forum just help me put a nice I7 system together for $1500. If you're already planning to spend $1400, then another $100 seems reasonable.

 You won't see $1400 worth of performance gain over what you have now.

The problem I see with i7 build right now is not the CPUs but motherboards. I'm not talking about $500 ones, but the same motherboards for s775 builds gives your much more options at this time.

I reconsider some of my choices and here is updated setup I came up with. What do you think?

i7 920 Nehalem
GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R
XFX 9500GT
Corsair 550W
G.Skill 6GB
Cooler Master CAC-T05-UB
Samsung 22x SATA LightSribe
WD 640GB
Windows 7 64bit
build cost $950

The reason I'm not going to reuse parts from my existing setup is because I'm planning to keep it for time being (just replacing mobo)

Windows 7 hasn't been released yet and won't be until end of the year at least. I'm referring to Beta version.

But the Beta version will expire...
Your budget will end up higher than $950.

It will expire at the end of August, but than again there is always 120 day trick (if you know what I'm talking about) By the time that expires W7 should be around in stores
