Get a camera made by a camera company for sure.

Megapixles aren't everything.

Getting something by Canon, Fuji, etc. will be a good bet.

i personally have a s45 and its incredible but u should get the newest s60 if u want midrange

if u want little and light and point and shoot canon elph editions

high range: all cannons g2's S, ect

i really like canon when talking about cameras as you can see, their cameras are just very clean cut designs and the features are awesome, good reputation as camera manufactor, and its reliable.

I'll agree with the pro-canon comments here. I've taken close to 6000 pictures with my A40 and it's still working great.

its hard to set a price limit because i dont really know how much these things cost. what i'm really looking for is the best bang for your buck. i'm going to be going to europe this summer, and i'd like a camera to get some pictures. I'm not looking to take professional shots, i just want pictures that are a reasonable size and not blurry. i'll go check out the site that usernamemax posted.

I have a Canon S70 (7.1MP, wide angle lens), cost me around $490+ tax. It takes great pictures, and has lots of manual controls. It's rather heavy, compared to the rest of compact cameras, wich indicates how good the quality is. Great LCD display, and nice mechanical shutter.

Keep in mind that you'll have to shell out more bucks for a decent memory card. I spent $90 more for a 1GB CF card.

I bought my sister a Fuji Finepix a340 (I think that's the model - it's the 4mp model) - it was under $200 with the dock kit. Went with the dock because then she wouldn't need a card reader, plus it came with a rechargable battery and AC adapter. I spent about $200 once I added either a 256 or 128mb xD card (can't remember which).

It takes excellent pictures. I borrowed it a couple weeks ago when I forgot my camera and really liked it. I may pick one up for myself now because while I love my current camera, it's much to bulky for candid photos.

But, but, but, the tech article in a newspaper once said "All that matters is the megapixel rating. Higher megapixels means better image quality."
They of course never mentioned saturation, white balance, compression quality, or anything else - just how great it was to have lots of pixels. That is why newspapers are not a good source of computer information - unfortunately, they're also what most people are going to read.


I've used Kodak cameras - DC3200, and a DC3400 - 1 and 2 megapixels, respectively. The DC3400 is the one I use currently. My complaints:
- Take three pictures in rapid succession, then wait maybe 10-15 seconds to take another picture, as it takes awhile to write to the CF card. Maybe a faster card would help this.
- The compression method it uses introduces a little bit of waviness into the image, but I still find the quality of the pictures to be excellent. It'd be awesome to have a camera that supports something lossless, like PNG. Of course, you wouldn't be able to fit nearly as many images into the same amount of space, compared to JPG.
And for the price, I can't complain - I think I paid $100 for it, plus two 32MB CF cards, in the FS/T forum here. 2x optical zoom, a good macro mode - pretty nice.

I have the Panasonic FZ-15, a 4 mega-pixel 12x zoom camera. It's fantastic. The only thing is is it's a bit large, so I'm not sure if the size would put you off of it. THey also make a more compact version of it as well.

I'm a pro-photographer and it's ALL i shoot, save studio stobes.

Check out the 5200 or 7900.

Basically because low-to-midrange cameras from Nikon suck. Nikon excels in the dSLR and high end non-slr, such as the Coolpix 8800. The downsize is, they're $800 and up.

If you want lots of zoom to get in real close, I recommend the Olympus C765 UZ. Its great for me (being a noob), its not too big, and hasnt given me any problems.

The only annoyance is that it uses "Auto ISO" and for the pictures i take, ISO 64 looks the best. So, i have to manually switch it to ISO 64 before taking my pictures.

Another good camera is the Canon A520. You can save some $ and go with the canon A510 which is just 3MP version.

Ok, if you want point and shoot and small, Canon's ELPHs are really good. I myself don't like them. I'm not a girl and I don't care about carrying small stuff. My Motorola V600 is huge and so is my server tower desktop. I don't want those SFF crap.

Anyways, if you want one notch up you can compare the Nikon Coolpixes or in my opinion the Canon S45, S50, S60, S70 reign supreme. These are novice/intermediate cameras almost in a class of its own. They have all manual controls as well as automatic control, giving you as much control as you want or as little as you want. I find Canon and Nikon to have the best lenses. Sony is just a no-no here.

The Canon G series are awesome too. I own a Canon Powershot G3. It friggn owns. It's big, but so what. I can stuff it in my pocket still, but I get wonderful shots. The new G6 owns even more. It's much smaller and packs in more features + higher resolution. Swivel LCD makes it uber nice. Another camera that's good in this class is the Olympus C8080. Back when I bought my camera I was deciding between a G3 of a C-5060. Both are really nice. I think the Olympus has F1.8?? That's a really good lens there.

SLR? Digital Rebel XT!!!!! Nikon D70 works too.

Very good advice here. My S70 is very very nice, I like it a lot. My father and I are trying to decide wether to get the new Rebel XT or a D70. I would prefer the Rebel XT, as it uses the same battery packs as my S70 and has the same OS and GUI, wich would make it very easy to learn.

However, Nikon lenses are superior than Canon's. But the new Rebel XT packs some very nice features, such as a noise-free CMOS sensor and 8MP imager. It's a tough choice.
