Do you not go on vacation? Do you not spend anything on enjoyment? Is your computer a 10 year old eMachines? To me it sounds like you aren't working to retire, you are working to make the value of your bank account grow. Life can be enjoyed before 55.

I went to Maui twice with my wife and brought my brother and his wife to NYC for NYE, then brought them to DC with their kids for my son's 1st birthday. Those 4 trips were probably less than the TCO of a BMW and my wife and I, my brother and his wife and their kids will remember it the rest of their lives.

As the post above mentions, if you have "I need to spend money on a depreciating asset that I won't even care about in 10 years" at the top of your list, then you're really not doing it right.

Well, self absorbed insecure people need to show off too. They think pinky rings and big gold chains are too tacky, gotta clean it up a bit with a bimmer.

Lol, I bought it for myself only. I could really give two shits what anyone else thinks about it.

I'd rather be taken seriously if I ever have to meet with any Docs or admins and not show up in some hoopty.

Don't try to backtrack dude. We all know that you think you need to impress people with your car. Your insecurity about yourself pretty well. Your car defines you, not the other way around.

Hardly, I get to campus at 6am and leave at around 10pm to go home. No one really knows I drive the thing other than my friends.

I threw that thing in for trolling mostly, you would be surprised with what most of the other students around here drive, I'm solidly midpack in the parking lot.

I can't fathom why anyone would have such a hardon for not wanting a nice car? You don't appreciate good engineering? Fine and dandy, people like different things. Chances are when I'm done with schooling+residency I'll be making enough to afford the car + everything else.

Me driving my 335i seems like I raped your sister in order to buy it.

ROFL at "engineering". It's marketing buddy. They aren't engineered well, if they were they would be far more reliable but they aren't. Not only do they break more but they are more expensive to fix. Why? Because they can get away with it.

I am sure you were doing it to troll, but nice try at backtracking even more. The sad part is that you actually are like this and actually do believe the shit they sell you on.

Nothing I find more cute than someone who buys an expensive new car and shows it off like it's the new bling bling. Knowing that someone stupid enough to buy a new car and show it off isn't smart enough to be able to make enough money to pay with cash - it's just an "awww how cute" moment when you realize that it isn't even their car. The owner (the bank) can come by and grab it at any moment with no compliance. How you brag about something you don't even own is beyond me

Anyhow - on my side, I buy all my vehicles used. You know the ol' a car is worth 20% less the moment you drive it off the lot? Yeah, it's definitely true - and I will damn sure take advantage of that. I tend to go for cars that are ~2-4 years old that give good mileage. Currently on a 2006 Acura TSX. Love the brand, though I foresee myself getting an SUV for kiddos at some point

I like cars. To me, it is more than a transportation tool because I enjoy driving and the latest and greatest gadgets built into them. So if I spend a higher proportion of my income on things I enjoy, then who the hell are you trying to judge me?

You don't see me judging you because you spend $5/day at Starbucks on your $40k income, so you should do the same and stop worrying about how others like to spend their money.

Had to help a guy get out of the snow with his VW Jetta by pushing it. I pulled right out of the snow with my AWD and 9.5" of ground clearance. The other guy was like, I can't believe you did that so easily.

That was not true of my Porsche, Lexus, or GT-R. After driving off the lot, I could have turned around and resold them for pretty much what I paid for them new (+- a couple thousand).

I buy all my cars new because the cost of a used one is only a few thousand off a new. Plus I have a full warranty, no mileage, newer car with better features and piece of mind because I'm the only one that has owned the vehicle. Those factors are worth the extra money to me.

Aaaaaaand you're being taken advantage of. Ask anyone that knows money - finance - the automobile industry - you're an idiot if you thinking buying new actually saves money - or is anywhere close to the difference in savings.

The reason people don't get a hardon for a new car - is because the people with an IQ past 50 have realized that 1 year later, it will look exactly like your current car Boring, filled with shit, not taken care of (unless you're a huge car enthusiast with TONS of time, no kids, and little job) and yet completely worth the same amount.

No one is advocating not to ever get a used car - especially if you have the extra money. But it tends to be the same people that take their car repairs to auto dealerships and actually trust them when they say they need shit.

I can agree that maybe a new expensive car would not be worth it for some people, but I don't understand this mindset of "I'll work my ass off now, and save everything I can, that way I can have a nice retirement. Sacrifice everything now for when I am 60. Then I can chill." I prefer to make the most of things now, not when I'm a decrepit old man. I would prepare for retirement, but only as an unfortunate necessity, I wouldn't make it the goal of my grand life plan.

The used car market is fucked up. For cars like Civics and Accords, it makes sense to buy new. If I wanted a boring appliance car like that, it would probably be a new car.

You claimed a car depreciates 20% immediately.

I countered with why that's not necessarily true.

You respond with a straw man argument as I never claimed buying new saves money. In fact, I explained why I would pay MORE for new.

Who's the idiot again?

im not talking about new cars vs used cars, im talking about expensive cars. my used car cost more than many new cars cost.

he is, and again, screaming SAVE SAVE SAVE like all the poor people on this thread are. they just can't fathom the fact that some people can save and enjoy nice things simply because they have never been in that position.

Well lets see here, I've had my 335 for about a year and a half.

Boring? hardly, no matter how shit a day I've had its never failed to put a smile on my face.
Filled with shit? My trunk has a few books in it, some med equipment, my gym bag and my white coat hanging in the back seat
Not taken care of? Its probably cleaner than yours, I give it a bath every couple weeks.

I'm a huge motorhead, I actually get joy out of my car when I get behind the wheel. I guarantee I work longer hours and have much less free time than you do and still manage to keep it looking respectable.

Your life is not all of ours.

Seriously, all I do is read about ways you can instantly die or be paralyzed or lose control of your body.

F that, I'm very well aware of how I should live my life.

Exactly. I went from a top of the line fully loaded f150 with heated/cooled leather, sync, four door, power everything, v8, etc.. to a stripped down 10 year old Silverado with no carpet, manual doors/locks, v6. Truck has taken me to work everyday just the same. Bought a trailer hitch to pull my trailer which it still has enough power to do that. I consider repairs/maintenance just part of the cost of owning an older vehicle and even with that considered it is still way cheaper to own and drive. Also insurance is cheaper.

What you basically did was cash in the "equity" for the F150, I guess if you have better uses for the $$ then why not. I bought my car new in '05, I'm hoping to get 13 years out of it, thing about it is you have to have some mechanical skills to keep an older car/truck running so it maximizes your savings..

So, let's spend our discretionary income on a car, right?

If you ask some people, "list the top 50 most things that are most enjoyable in life," I personally find it pathetic if "driving my car to work" is put on that list. But, to each their own. It's just my opinion, and everyone has their own opinion, that if "driving my car" registers on your list of enjoyable experiences, you're doing that whole life thing wrong.

Everyone spends their discretionary income on things others find pointless and a waste of money. Applying logic to it misses the point.
