Looking for somethings with GREAT MPG.

Here are my criteria/circumstances:
- Daily drive: 40 miles in heavy / bumper to bumper traffic
- new or used, doesn't matter
- looking to keep payment around $300, with some wiggle room for taxes, etc.
- looking into electric as possibility - have access to free charge station at work but not at home

Reading the chevy forums, it seems like the volt is going to be the best option. Thoughts?

For stop and go traffic hybrid would ideal. If the volt has regenerative braking, then yes, it would be a very smart idea. You plug in hybrid could keep you from burning gas at all.

40 miles round trip? I'd definitely do a Volt. Can you plug into work at all?

Although as nerp mentioned, with regenerative braking & being in bumper-to-bumper traffic, you might be able to recoup some juice. Chevy advertises a 38-mile range on their battery, so you could probably eek out 40 miles if you're careful. Although the Fuelly range is really good too, it looks like it's about 68 MPG average when you charge every night:

Nicer-sized car than the little electric guys too, especially if you're going to be sitting for long periods of time. My last commute was 1.5 hours round trip, sometimes 2 hours with traffic, and the majority was in bumper-to-bumper. Had a stick shift, it was horrible, wish I had had a Volt back then haha!

Definitely recommend the Volt on that kind of route.

I watch Jay Leno's Garage and he uses a Chevy Volt as one of his DDs. Says he has only used 1 or 2 tanks of gas in his 10k+ miles on it. And he said, he had to use the gas because it was getting too old!

For those 40 mile or less drives, I think the Volt is definitely the way to go. (If not full electric)

Work is the only place I can plug in.

If you can plug in at work and home and your concern is maximum mileage, then I have to agree with everyone else that the Volt sounds perfect. With a place to charge at home and at work you'll get all of your commuting done on electric (cheaper than gasoline even when you're using your home's electricity and paying for it to charge) and still be able to take long trips.

Plus for 2014 there's a fat price drop for the Volt Something on the order of $5k IIRC.
