I'll start with Cliff's for the attention challenged folks:
1. New carpet installed yesterday in my newly finished basement about 650 sq ft
2. Has 5 "streaks" see pictures below
3. Installer thought I could get a discount or force re-install (off the record)
4. Need a reasonable idea of an appropriate discount to get from store if I keep the carpet as-is.

Worked from home from work yesterday to have carpet installed in my newly finished basement. About 75% through the installation the installer (a contractor of the carpet store) brought me down to show me some streaks in the carpet. He wanted me to be aware that the streaks weren't his seam but a flaw in the carpet. Apparently berber carpet does this sometimes.

When you look close, its a dark colored thread that is lined up perfectly to create a 3-5 foot dark line in the carpet. The streaks look worse in person than they do in the pictures. In fact, I have to search for the actually seam in the carpet and the streaks just pop right out.

I called the store immediately after it was brought to my attention they said to go ahead and let them finish installing and they'll start the claim process (whatever that means). They asked me to send digital pictures. Other than the 25% down payment I don't plan on paying another penny until this is resolved one way or another.

So if I decide to keep it, what is a reasonable adjustment that I can expect the store to offer me?

Pics below, the first 5 pictures of are the two most prominent streaks.

Apparently...because it's extremely difficult to see any streaks in the photos (at least enough to warrant a complaint).

Doesn't look too bad to me but maybe the pictures don't show it well. See if you can get a 10 - 15% discount. If you paid as much as we did, that's a good bit of cash.

75% off, they wont have to pay the installer to remove and install new carpet. How many yds?

the mill will have to eat the cost of reship also

berber is shit for the most part despite it's popularity, what it looks like is those streaks are actually woven into the carpet. They probably had a bad run of the lot due to some setup problem.

If you got the carpet through a major discount place this is typical...most don't recognize many carpet problems though.

It looks bad and the room is empty so it stands out like a sore thumb.

It doesn't help that its the very first thing that you see coming down the steps and unfortunately there will be no furniture covering that area.

bctbct - We did roughly 650 sq ft so I think that makes approx 72 yards. Are you serious about the 75%?

alkemyst - You are right the streaks are a dark thread woven into the carpet. Other than the color the carpet is fine.

We intentionally avoided the discount chains and went with a slightly higher price that had a pretty tight guarantee. We'll see how this works out.

For those who think this isn't a big deal try investing the $ to finish a basement then the money to buy the carpet and see if you'd be happy with a flawed product. Either you have no pride in your home or you don't own a home at all.

Fair enough... but IKEA just opened today in my area so we were waiting for the crowds to die down to fill the room.

I would shoot for it.

Figuring you probably paid about $12 per yard that a loss of $860 product.

Install probably around $5 per yard, theres another $350. Tear out, dispose- $200 I dont have a clue how much ship would be but probably at least $100. $650 to repair.

Less hassle for them to give you back $600.

The major problem you have at this point is the manufacturer is going to tell the carpet store they are not going to pay for the labor since they should have stopped when they found the flaw.

The installers subs of carpet store or hired by you?

Just looks normal for the type of carpet you got from the photos.

Quit your bitching.
