Maybe power play ain't fixed, as it is working as designed. Which leads to wonder about why all these rumours about a fix?

What about the fan speed issue with the 4870? Is this even an issue? I just installed the new driver and my idle temp is back up to 77C!

You still need to use the fan tweak, meaning no Linux unless you live in Alaska or use aftermarket cooling.

The improvements to the Linux driver mean nothing if the fan won't spin up properly. Even short periods in Linux practically cause the back of the card to glow red, to say nothing about giving the GPU any serious load. I've been an ATI fan for a while, and the performance of the 4870 is nothing to sneer at, but this is an issue that needs to be fixed. Who gives a damn if Linux now has Crossfire X support if running two 4870s melt through your case?

Edit - At least, under Vista 64, I can report a 500 point increase in 3Dmark06, for what that's worth.

I'm running Vista 64-bit and at the default setting while playing games the fan speed never goes up.

1. You can do a simple modification to the XML profile to determine when you want to fan to speed up
2. Use Gainward's new tool
3. You can flash the Bios with this permanently using RBE regardless of what OS you use.
4. As long as your games aren't crashing as a direct cause of overheating who cares? GPU/CPU's are designed to operate up to 105c and mosfet/VRMS at 125c, nothing to worry about.

Yes, that is a Problem

it never goes up and the GPU gets hot and limits O/C'ing

my fan never went over 17% .. even a noise princess would sleep peacefully

Now it goes very high
[seriously .. at 17% it is 82C; at 80% is it in the mid-50s; at 100% it still isn't as loud as my 2900xt and it dropped to 50C .. when i switched it back to dynamic, the fan shut off for a couple of minutes
- now THAT is one hellofa stock VGA cooler]
:Q

thanks OP

People over at Rage3d are already whining about how bad these drivers are lol. I swear some people are just idiots, you see the typical ATI drivers suck, im never buying ATI again etc etc. I wonder how many people have ever had a 1st generation card and realise the issues you are going to have with new drivers and new tech getting the bugs out. I went through this same shit when I got my 8800GTX, waaaaaaaaaaa the drivers suck hurry up Nvidia blah blah blah. I personally had to wait a very long time for drivers that didnt lock up in WoW, but hey I understood the risk when I bought the card.

The fan spins up automatically for me. I ran the fur benchmark in windowed mode and pulled GPU-Z to the front. Temps were still way to warm though. At idle I was at 77c and under load (even with the fan correction to about 49%) it was still too toasty for my liking. So I did the XML tweak and have the fan @ 75% again all the time.

Edit: this was on an MSI 4850

Am I right in assuming this is an issue with the 4850 as well? Or is it only the 4870? I recently set up a dual boot with gentoo, but I haven't gotten this far with the linux install yet.

so fan speed is regulated by hardware, but it can be overridden by driver if manual mode is enabled by editing the XML. Basically it means it will run the same on both Windows and Linux if it is not hand-tweaked.

New Linux driver allows to read temperature:
aticonfig --od-gettemperature

Default Adapter - ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
Sensor 0: Temperature - 77.50 C

..which is same as in Windows.

For my HD4750, fan speed is 22%-23% on idle resulting in t emp 78-80C

Is it me or the Vista driver for 32 Bit is not working? When I opened the CCC installer, it would not detect my card, and the driver folder is empty, while the 8.7 version have files on it and would detect my card fine. I downloaded the driver only and then it detected my card fine and install with no issues along with the CCC, could someone enlight me?

They're fine for me in Vista 64 (tested a bit of ET: QW, Stalker, Mass Effect). If you are reading Rage3d be advised poster IQ is not very high there
