New Chili's Math

Me and my buddy Franksta decided to go out for lunch today to help support the donation Chili's will make today from all earnings to the red cross. Well we get there and recieve some terrible service, but since it was for a good cause no biggie. Me and Franksta both order the same identical things minus he got a sprite and I got lemonade. Well when we get our bills mine is one cent more then his. Somehow in there tax collection they billed me one more penny then he did. Here is a pic of the reciepts.

It didn't break evenly...the tax amount was an odd number. This is why one check is one penny higher than the other. It is kind of hard to divide 5 cents in half

What he said. Tax was 1.85. Let me guess, your sales tax is 8%. If you do the math, you'll see they'll have to unevenly split it.

Exactly...so how is it new math? It seems perfectly logical to me

8% sales tax on 91 cents would be 99 cents total...split two ways would be 45 and 44...

If you look at the checks, Chili's split the order in two (split 0049)...you either gained a penny when they did this or lost a penny.

You were lucky they split it up when they did, if they taxed you each separately you would have each had to pay 0.93 if they round it which I assume they do. You made out like a bandit, well, youre friend did I guess.

The problem is too obvious. You got charged for the shrimp basket first and then the drink. Your friend got charged in the reverse order and therefore got charged less.

Or maybe the waitress thought your friend was cuter so she gave him the lower bill.

I ate breakfast at UDF everyday this week and even though I got the same thing everyday the total was never the same amount twice.

Umm...the pre-tax subtotals are indentical. The tax is computed based on that.
