New codenames = o.O wtf

Sorry if I seem newbish by the contents of this post, but I'm really starting to get a headache from all this codename crap.

Could someone explain the following to me?

Yonah
Sossaman

I understand they're both new dual and single cores that Intel will be rolling out in 06. That's all I understand

Pacifica

New virtualization/security features that AMD will implement in their Socket M2 processors?

Yes, I believe you got that one right. Though I'm not ENTIRELY sure, as I don't pay uber-close attention to all of the codename mumbo-jumbo that the "Big Two" spit out .

Not quite, Sossaman is the SERVER cpu. Its platform will be multiprocessor capable and use registered DDR2.

About the other two, Presidio will be security while Pacifica will be virtualization.

The Hammer series was the best as far as code names go. You just can't beat ClawHammer, SledgeHammer, etc.

Venice and San Diego weren't too bad either. They sound like vacation spots. Also, San Diego was a winner (other than the fact that it's a really good cpu) b/c it reminds you of the sun. I don't really have much to say about the Newcastle. That almost reminds me of White Castle and their starch burgers. Winchester...ehhh. Manchester...ehhh. Toledo almost sounds like torpedo...so I guess that's good.


Bona Fide-AT has some roadmaps for both AMD and Intel...they should be a good guide for you in distiguishing between the various new cpus to be released. Good luck remembering 'em all!

Huh? All 90nm ones are named after cities. I dont see how San Diego reminds you of the sun, it sounds like a normal city name to me... maybe its 'cause I live there.

I actually live in a place called Newcastle-under-Lyme in the UK, or Newcastle for short.
Winchester and Manchester are also cities in the UK, the latter being the birthplace of the band Oasis.

It'll be interesting what AMD finally decides to call K10. I doubt they will continue with the '64' suffix, but on the other hand they've already used 'Athlon xxxx+'.
Athlon 2 perhaps?

LOL...Sorry, I thought my comment was a no-brainer. It doesn't literally remind me of the sun as an object but rather, the fact that it's sunny (in San Diego). Since you live there it I guess now that makes it even easier to understand. And I realize that those names are all after cities. Venice, Italy; Manchester, UK (or CT, USA and various other states in the USA). But I still seem to be reminded of White Castle everytime I hear Newcastle. I think it's b/c I didn't like the tiny, nasty burgers there one time when I was in Detroit. Don't eat there unless you want to gain a gut 2x faster than McDs...or throw up.
