Specs:
Epox EP-9NPA+Ultra nForce 4 Ultra
AMD 64 3700+ San Diego
1 GB (2x512) OCZ Gold DDR 400 (PC3200) [DC at 2.8v 2-2-2-5]
Samsung SyncMaster 913v (19")
BFG 7800GTX 256
Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 250GB SATA150 HD
Enermax Noisetaker (485w)
Thermaltake Tsunami
Creative Audigy 2 ZS
NEC Black IDE DVD Burner
LITE-ON Black IDE DVD-ROM Drive
HK Soundsticks II
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Non-64)

Aside from the adjusted memory timings/voltage (from 2.5v and 2.5-3-3-7), everything is stock, and I've had this problem from day one anyway.

The issue is this: 90% of .exe, .rar, and .zip files are corrupt in some way. Rar and Zip files get "Unexpected end of archive" and "File is Corrupt" errors, PC Mark 04 installers get 0x80040703 errors, 3DMark 03 and 05 get Component Transfer errors with a main component catastrophic failure. Running memtest tests 1-6 I get no issues, have not had time to run 7-10 but if it will find the issue I will do it. The .Rar's and .Zip's that work only work to a degree, with some of the files being corrupt and a majority of it being fine (if I'm lucky).

Thanks anyone for any help in the matter, it is really a pain not being able to install anything or download anything

Are you using Nvidia's ActiveArmor firewall?

I recently built a new computer with an Asus A8N-SLI Premium board and I had no experience with nForce chipsets, so I gave the firewall a try. I experienced random downloaded files being corrupt with the firewall on, and since gave up on it. I went back to using ZoneAlarm and have had no problems since.

On a side note, I assume you're using the built in Nvidia network controller right? If so, is your status screen for it reporting sent packets as being received and vice versa? It's weird, I download files and the status shows me uploading. I made a topic about this in Networking, but no one has responded yet.

nVidia Firewall is disabled, I am using ZoneAlert Pro.

nVidia network controller is definitely sending a ton of packets when I download. Total while downloading a file is 35,000 and rising and 120 received at the moment

I once got the same kind of problem as you did. The suggestion was to check any defective hardware, and the result was I had a defective zip drive (even though I wasn't even using it). Also, set your ram back to default and run ram test...

I would suspect a Ram issue. While this memory wants to run at 2.8v natively, the motherboard manual says it wants to use 2.5v. Now, obviously you would think that if the bios could support 2.8v, there shouldn't be a problem.

The manual says Dual Channel Ram configs are those that are installed in either DIMM slots 1 and 2, or slots 3 and 4. Do you have yours set up this way?

Have you tried putting them in the other two open slots vs where they are now? Have you tried running with just one stick vs. two? If no good with one, swap to the other stick and try that...might have one bad stick.

Have you tried running in SPD mode; letting the ram itself dictate its settings to the bios?

Do you have any other brand to test in this machine?

When I first started up the RAM was running at 2.5v at 2.5-3-3-7 and I was still having this issue. RAM is in 1/2 DC. This is really the only RAM I have without taking another machine apart, which I don't want to do because I have enough trouble with that one as is. I'll give memtest another shot I suppose, then swap some stuff around.

No offense, man, but you would be wise to try some suggestions before just bumping your thread. If you're not willing to open up the case and swap stuff around, then you're really looking for some magic dust somewhere that might not exist.

At the very least, I would try pulling one of the two sticks of ram out (of slot 2) and see what happens then when you download. If no change, pull that one, and put the other one in (by itself). Such a simple exercise to try and get this thing tested.

That's what I would do. I really don't know what you expect someone else to tell you, but good luck nonetheless.

I have switched the RAM around, I really don't think the RAM is the issue. I've run memtest @ 5 passes.

EDIT: Of course I'm willing to open the case, I built this computer anyway

I'm just hoping to find somebody's who's had this problem before and their fix.

I'm not saying it IS a ram issue; I'm just saying you have to be willing to go through the process of troubleshooting to rule out problems. You put a lot more stock in Memtest than I ever would, but that's me.

Have you looked in your XP Event Viewer for error messages? They might help to narrow this down.

Start button/Settings/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer. Look at the Application and System logs. Any red icons are error messages. Yellow icons are warnings. White icons are informational, but I'd take a look at those, too.

Post any errors you see in both the System and Application logs.

You may have a corrupted Temporary Files folder. I'm talking about the Windows Temp files, not the ones associated with Internet Explorer, although that should be cleared, too.

Clear out all files and sub-folders in the C:\Windows\Temp folder. (you might want to sort these by date first, as often times the most current temp file won't delete, and it will stop the whole deletion process if you've highlighted all the files/folders. If you sort by date and leave out the most recent temp file date (from your current session), you should be able to get rid of all the other files/folders)

Clear out your Temporary Internet Files as well. Do that through the Control Panel/Internet Options/Temporary Internet Files/Delete Files/ location. Delete all offline content when prompted there, too.

Run Chkdsk on your hard drive. Easiest way is to open up My Computer (icon). Then RIGHT CLICK on your C: drive icon. Left click Tools. Left click Error Checking\Check Now. Left click the checkbox that says Automatically fix File System Errors. It will tell you it can't do the check now, and ask whether you would like this to be done at next reboot. Click Yes (or OK; whatever the prompt is). Reboot. It will go through a hard drive error and file system check. I would not check the other checkbox about scanning and detecting bad sectors, unless you have tons of time to let this process go on.

Try your zip/rar downloads again. Still no good?

Run the System File Checker. Have your XP CD in the cdrom drive (and exit out of it's installation screen when that starts.). Click Start Button. Click Run. In the box that comes up, type in (without quotes) "sfc /scannow" Note there is a space between sfc and /scannow. Click OK. Let it check to make sure all system files are correct.

The system file checker will take into account any Windows Updates you've installed, so don't worry about it putting old system files on your drive. It won't. However, you may have to reinstall video drivers afterwards, because I've noticed that OpenGL files (gaming) are reverted to the XP defaults, vs. my custom Nvidia drivers after doing a SFC check.

Reboot after the small box for SFC disappears off your screen.

Try zips and rars again.

I would also run things like spybot and hijackthis, although I know you said this problem was there from the beginning.

Check to see that all motherboard drivers are installed/updated and correct. Check to see that your SATA drive has the correct drivers.

I'd be suspecting either RAM or your hard drive. Something is getting hosed during the handoff of your files from ram to hard drive.

One other thing you can do is to delete your current pagefile. The best way to do this to install the Recovery Console to your drive, or run Recovery Console from the XP CD. If you want to run it from CD, boot up with the CD. Let the Windows initial install routine go until it asks you whether you want to do a repair by typing "R". This is the first screen where you will be prompted for any action. Press R and the recovery console will start from CD.

Once it gets up to the dos-style prompt, you'll be prompted to choose which Windows installation you want to "repair". I'm assuming you only have one installed. So, just type the number 1 on the keyboard. You'll be asked to enter the admin password. Type that.

Now, you will be at a c:\windows something or other prompt. Once at the prompt, do this:

(quotes are added here only to specify exact things to type...don't use the quotes when you type the commands).

"cd .."

"cd .."

You should be back at just a c:\ prompt at this point.

Now, type in (no quotes again):

"copy boot.ini pagefile.sys"

"del pagefile.sys"

Pagefile.sys does not appear in recovery console, which is why you need to copy a file to its name and then delete it. Your pagefile will be recreated after your next boot.

Remove the CD at this point. Type "exit" to get out of recovery console, and a reboot will begin.

Just like to note that I also switched off my ZoneAlarm firewall and am now working with the router firewall and Norton. No problems yet.

I've done everything you've mentioned, and still no dice. I'm starting to think this is a Windows problem, as when I tested these solutions by downloading PCMark04, I got a CRC error.

Anyway, errors in event viewer:

Boot in safe mode with networking, and let us know if you can replicate the problem with downloading files.

If you take a file from a CD and put it on the hard drive, and then run it (say, a large file that is an installer for an application) does it work OK?

Disabling won't cut it. If safe mode w/networking works, you will need to go thru the process of troubleshooting which service, device driver, whathaveyou is the issue. MSCONFIG can help in doing that quite a bit. It's possible you can disable a bit of software but the filter driver is still running and still causing a problem.

I'll give the safe mode solution a shot tomorrow, going to sleep now.

As of now I've just been downloading things onto my laptop and sending them to my PC via AIM, they work fine. Games install fine from CDs as well.

EDIT: Unless you were talking to AsianriceX, but I'll give the safe mode thing a shot anyway

In the meantime, one other thing to consider is your antivirus program might be corrupting these files, too. The programs usually quarrantine downloads temporarily, then scan them, then send them to their ultimate destination on your hard drive. It's possible that your AV might have a corrupted temp folder, or is somehow screwing up the translation.

Might be worth a shot to uninstall the one you have (presumably Norton) and install Grisoft's FREE antivirus (works very well) called AVGFree.

One thing you DON"T want to do is run them both at the same time, so I would definitely uninstall the one you have, then install AVG. Do it via AIM if you have to (the download).

From your HiJackthis log:

C:\WINDOWS\Integrator.exe

I don't know what that is, and I've never heard of it. Your other running processess seem fine after a quick glance, but I'd have a look into that if I were you.

.... five minutes pass....

Okay, the HiJackThis log analyser website reports this:

C:\WINDOWS\Integrator.exe Check with an antivirus scanner Safe.
Safe. running process. (Integrator.exe)
Part of TuneUp Utilities
Currently there is no visitor's assessment!
Possibly nasty! According to our database this process runs normally in c:\programme\tuneup utilities\! Check if you know this process and arrange a viruscheck where required.
http://www.hijackthis.de/

I'd get rid of it.

[Edit] Also, have you run Prime95 for a few hours?
What are your temperatures in the BIOS? What about the voltages?

I've had currupt download issues a few times, it has always been a ram problem.

Can't get internet in safe mode with networking, don't know what that issue is. I've done it on other computers before fine. The anti-virus thing is probably going to be a near last resort thing, because I have to find my Norton box/key/CD.

Ran Prime95 for two hours, temps were fine. Mobo idles around 35 and goes to 38/39 with load. CPU idles around 33 and goes to 39/40 with load. GPU is steady around 50.

RAM voltage is 2.8v, CPU around 1.485v

Here's a status shot:

Also ran another 4 hours of memtest with no errors.

I'm thinking my two main options (besides the antivirus) are to RMA the memory or to reinstall Windows.

And as far as the integrator.exe, that's for TuneUp Utilities 2004, nothing to worry about. Just a tool for cleaning up around the PC.

I still don't quite see the answers:

1. If you download using an FTP program (or any program aside from MSIE) does this behavior change?
2. If you remove all programs not from Microsoft in MSIE's add-in programs (Options / Internet Options / Programs / Manage Add-Ons) and quit MSIE and then reopen it, does anything change?

This sounds like an Internet Explorer problem. The AOL AIM file transfer works fine, so it's just MSIE, so that sounds like a malware add-in or problem that's impacting just MSIE.

Have you installed Microsoft Antispyware?

I actually use Mozilla Firefox whenever I can for everything that it allows me to (exceptions being Windows Update and some sites).

MS Anti-spyware is installed and detects nothing.

Since we can say things over port 80 don't work, but AIM IM works, it seems that only port 80 apps have a problem ... so far.

...or you have the same plugin in both FF and MSIE, but that seems unlikely.

...or you have a virus / malware, but since you say you can dl stuff with AOL AIM IM perfectly, that seems unlikely.

I have a DFI Lanparty UT NF4 Ultra, and nearly all of my downloads were getting corrupted. I disabled the ActiveArmor, and the number of corrupted downloads/updates decreased, but were still happening enough to be a pain. My DFI board also has a second NIC provided by Marvell. I switched to it, and no problems since. Some quick searching of forums on some other sites has shown this to be a common problem. The nVidia ethernet is simply broken.
