Hello theleo7:
Were you ever able to fix this?

A friend of mine just received his dv1000 via Costco and he has exactly the same problem.

He finds it so annoying when listening to music or dvds that he is returning it.

Does anybody else experience this?

how's it going, brave beta-testers? i'm still waiting around before i pull the trigger, and anxiously await dell's 14'' wxga challenger. keep up the good posts which are definitely helpful for prospective buyers.

gadgeTT: what screen resolution did you have to set in order to successfully play dvds at 16:9? or is screen res not a factor?

anybody else having problems with the memory card reader?

deejayshakur, while you wait, you may wanna check out gateway's challenger, the m210 line, bestbuy.com carries these 14" widescreen gateways, so you might be able to see it in person. I went to a local one last week but nothing on display.

Btw, I returned the v2000 I bought because my wife can't stand the screen looking so bland, I played around with the color setting and got no where. to HP for the full refund (credited in 5 days to my credit card after I shipped it back), and I don't even have to pay for shipping.

yea i saw the m210x a while back and made a post in another thread. however, i was VERY unimpressed with the features. no bluetooth option, only 4200rpm hdd's, and others that i have since forgotten. in short, i caved and finally ordered a dv1000 that should arrive early next week. im just hoping that i don't have any of the aforementioned high pitched buzzing or hardware problems that i've read about. of course, i have until january 16 to decide if i want to return it, and according to your experience, it seems that the return process is very painless. i'll post my thoughts later.

Hello everyone,

I am new, but I have a very important problem. I love my DV1000, however, I am having the clock problem. It only happens when I am running on battery power, and even then it seems random. But when the laptop is off, it does not count the time up. So i shut my laptop off at 3pm, turn it on at 5pm and it says 3:02pm. The one that I bought came with the bios version F.12, but because I am desperate I tried flashing it with the new update, but that has not fixed it. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, what have you done to fix it? Tech support is not helping so far, but they are trying.

Just FYI, the 60GB 5400rpm harddrive option is no longer available as of today (on both dv1000 and v2000). If you want a faster 5400rpm drive, your only option is the 80gb, which is a whopping $125 upgrade

has anyone used both the dv1000/2000 and the IBM T4x? I wonder how the keyboard on the dv1000 compares to the Thinkpad. Also, any more comments on the battery life? Still 2 hours for a P M?

see my post above. IBM keyboard is fantastic I was not impressed with this keyboard. May have been the display model was defective but right hand side of the keyboard had a very irritating flex. Key travel seemed less than IBM too.

It sounds like a battery problem. There is system battery that usually runs the internal clock while the notebook is turned off. Perhaps this other battery is defective.

AHHHHHH. I HAVE TRIED CALLING HP ABOUT THIS, AND NO ONE HAS GIVEN ME AN ANSWER, THEY KEEP TELLING ME THAT THEY WILL CALL ME BACK, AND THEY HAVE NOT. MY CLOCK IS NOT WORKING WHEN MY COMPUTER IS RUNNING ON BATTERIES AND I SHUT IT OFF, IT WORKS WHEN THE COMPUTER IS ON, BUT STOPS COUNTING UP WHEN IT IS OFF. MY COMPUTER CAME WITH THE F.12 FIX IN IT ALREADY, AND I HAVE TRIED FLASHING IT WITH THE F.12 AGAIN. WHAT SHOULD I DO? I DO NOT WANT TO RETURN IT, BUT I CANNOT HAVE A COMPUTER THAT HAS THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE HEARD THAT THERE IS A NEW FIX COMING OUT FROM SOME PEOPLE, BUT NOT FROM HP. HEEEELLLLLPPPPPPP PLLEEEASEE...

Make sure they fix your broken caps lock as well

Seriously tho, just call them and return it or exchange it. If your past the return/exchange period, call and ask to speak to a manager.

you have to be affirmative with these people. Tell them if they cant fix it over the phone they must let you send it in for service. Tell them they are stalling for time to outrun the warenty.

Ok I'm having a little trouble.

I'm trying to purchase a Compaq v2000 with the educational discount and 25$ off and neither are working.

When I go to customize, it shows my educational discountm, 1,129 originally and with APP its 1061.26 with a 30$ mail in rebate. As soon as I hit continue, the price jumps back up to 1129 with no indication of a 30$ MIR. I figured it would show up later in the checkout process, I added it to the cart and it still said 1,129.

I continued on, entered all my info but then I went to enter this coupon
$25 off $250 on Customizable HP Pavilion and Compaq Presario Notebook Purchase via coupon code "SV3022" (Expires 12/31/2004)

and it said it doesnt apply to the item i'm trying to purchase? What the hell, well I continue anyway unilt the last screen with the submit button and there are NO discounts what soever. What am I doing wrong here?

Thanks

I am not happy. I have been trying to get my clock problem fixed with HP for over a week now, and they keep telling me that someone will call them back and they keep trying to help me fix it, but nothing is working. The newest thing that they want to try is to use a new battery. Not a CMOS battery, just a new laptop battery. I told them that I have two batteries, a 12 cell and a 6 cell, and the clock problem persists with both batteries. and how in the hell could the laptop battery have ANYTHING to do with whether or not the computer keeps time when it is shut off. I am so sick of their terrible support at this point, my recommendation is to look else where, because personally, if they cannot fix it this week or get it on the road to being fixed, i have no use for the computer.

The squeeky wheel gets the grease.

You're letting *them* dictate the support procedure. You *know* the problem is the CMOS battery, so *tell* them that you're going to send it in for repair *at their expense*, and if they give you guff about it ask to speak to a manager.

Trust me, these support people act tough but they'll completely crumble if they can tell you're going to cause them a headache.

IMO once a lemon always a lemon. If you're in in your first 30 days and can return it, that's what I'd do. You can reorder it- perhaps now that they've been making it a bit longer, they've got the bugs out. Unless you got a super sweet deal... then yeah, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. I've also found being nice and polite with a calm voice, is helpful.

yea i was lucky to get one without the clock problem. however, i have began to hear the 'high pitched noise'. there apparently IS a solution
here.

for those that ordered recently, we have until january 16 to return it so i'm going to put this laptop to the test until then.

well I called tech support again for the 6th time in a week and a half and after having them put me through their whole prescripted card about taking out the battery and holding the power button and resetting this and that, which i have been made to do 5 times already, and having it not fix it still, I told them that we needed to resolve it tonight. So I am sending it in to get fixed, they say 4-5 days and it will be back to me, we will see. If the clock problem is not fixed, then there will be real trouble. Have others sent theirs in to get fixed? Did it work with all of you?

I'm still questioning the whole BriteView addon. It seems uncomfortably reflective. Someone at work recently purchased a v2000 with BriteView, and the overhead flourescents cast a horrible glare, making the screen difficult to read (the opposite of the intention).

So my question is does anyone have a dv1000/v2000 WITHOUT the BriteView screen, and, if so, do you like it? Is the tradeoff on contrast for readability ok?

thanks

GadgeTT on 11/3:
Regarding the DVD playback issue...with a bit more experimentation, I have discovered that movies will play back fine in Quickplay and in WinDVD, but Windows Media Player 10 seems to be locked into 4:3 aspect ratio playback. Even the "Properties" dialog for a playing DVD within WMP 10 says "Aspect Ratio: 16:9, 4:3 playback". Any ideas how to set WMP 10's DVD playback to 16:9?

Got my DV1000 yesterday (1.8GHz & 1GB Ram) and haven't figured out how to get Quickplay right yet. Any pointers??

I got the regular screen...after seeing the glare of the briteview it didn't seem likely to work well for all three kids watching movies in the back of the Tahoe. I tried looking at both side-by-side, but the BB guy was clueless...so I gambled. I like this one fine, though be sure to set the display options for LCD vs. normal (WinDVD and/or WMP) that made a big difference in color.

Where are the setting for getting the proper aspect ratio in Quickplay? Display is widescreen, but widescreen DVDs appear letterboxed. Even in Windows for that matter.
