Hi ... I'm going to build a new computer (in the very near future) and was wondering if anyone knows of a good "what to get" checklist ... and possibly an outline/instructions for helping (i've never put one together, but i've fiddled around with the insides enough to want to do it)

I have the major things down ...but things like "do i need the processor goo" (whatever it is) ... etc ... i'm not sure about ...

Any external sites that might be helpful are welcomed!

Many thanks!

can't really help you with any sites since i don't know any off the top of my head, but there shouldn't be much to it. the motherboard shoudl come with some type of installation booklet, which shows how to install the cpu, cards, hd, etc., and since you have messed around it shouldn't be a big problem. as for teh "cpu goo," it isn't required, but it is good to have. again, most heatsinks usually come with this, but if you want the better stuff you can go for some arctic silver 2, or even the arctic silver 3. unless you are really picky about temp. or plan to overclock, it shouldn't be a major issue.

as for recommendations, there was a site listed in one of the forums here: yahoogle.com on some of the parts that were considered "hot" and where to get them. most of the stuff i would probably get the same, but hey everyone has their own opinion. maybe you can check it out to just get an idea of what is the going trend.

hmm, i guess i might as well give a quick description on how to add put it together too.....and anyone please add or correct me as needed:

1. mount the motherboard into the case
2. attache the power switch, reset button, etc wires to the motherboard (details in motherboard manual)
3. install the cpu, and the ram
4. apply a thin, even layer of heatsink compound to the heatsink, or pull off the tape cover, or wahtever it is in your case, then attach the heatsink. Check that it is attached properly and firmly (this is crucial)
5. install your drives and attache the cables accordingly. i.e., IDE0 to master, etc etc.
6. install your cards
7. make all necessary power connections
8. check to make sure you did everything correctly......and you should be done

oh yeah, make sure you take proper precautions like making sure that the power supply is not plugged in, and that you ground yourself etc., though i am sure those were *given*

well good luck, hope i was of some help?

thanks for the input! anyone else with comments, feel free to jump in!

this is probably a stupid question, but other than "touching something metal to make sure all static electricty is gone" ... what would you do to ground yourself?

here is what I was thinking of buying (in the next few days; probably from newegg.com)

MOBO: Epox 8KHA+
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1700
CASE: Enlight EN-7237AZ (maybe; it's kinda ugly)
MONITOR: Hitachi CM721F (probably)
DVD: LiteOn 16x
VIDEO: Visiontek Xtasy 6564 GeForce3 Ti200 64MB ($50 rebate!)

HD: not sure
MEMORY: probably crucial -- not sure how much ... maybe 512MB?

I've got a few parts i'm going to salvage (SoundBlaster Live MP3, HP CDRW, firewire card, mouse, keyboard) ...

I had some trouble with the DLink firewire card I have with my PII 350. I'm not sure if it was a conflict between it and another component (possibly the sound card; the EAX program would pop up when the computer would crash) ... or if Gateway was right (in that my mobo doesn't support firewire -- except its a PCI card!)

Oh well ... i'm getting rid of this POS

I would suggest a 7200 rpm maxtor hard drive, those seem like solid components you have selected, is that cpu retail or oem? if it is oem you need to look into getting a heatsink and fan, I would just go through the cases and cooling forum, and the cpu and overclocking forum for advice on that (do a search first!) it is probably ok just to touch some unpainted metal inside the case to ground yourself, but if you are worried you could go to someplace like radio shack and pick up a grounding strap.

oh and make sure that when you are installing your motherboard you use the standoffs provided by the case manufacturer so you don't short out the mobo!
