new computer OS

I'm about to shell out for a 1.4 athlon, ECS K75sa, 512 mb ddr, kyro 2, ibm 60gb...I have windows 98se. I was just wondering if 98se is good enough and won't have any conflicts with this setup. Is ME, 2k, or XP any faster/more stable? Any suggestions? Thanks.

w2k is slower in games and such, but much more stable... I'd go for w2k!

Win2k will work but win98se will probably allow you to use most of your old equipment with fewer headaches (compatability).

And you said you already had win98se, use it first and decide if you want something more.

Avoid WinME like the plague.

You are asking which OS will work with your hardware. Well, Win9x is much more compatible than Win2K (NT) when it comes to hardware in general.

Win2K (NT) has trouble with various popular soundcards, and other mainstream gadgets. It's always a wild goose chase to try to find 2K drivers for your favorite peripheral. So that's my answer to your hardware question.

Um, I would have to greatly disagree with you there. I think Win2k is fine for all my peripherals and its stability is by far, better than 98. Drivers are availabe for almost ANY peripheral, this may have been true in late '99 when it first came out but certainly not now. Especially when getting a new system you will be using for a long time, why use such old technology on it? I think Win2k is the best bet for your buck.
