I have around $1100-$1200 to spend on a system that I want to last 3+ years. I don't overclock and I don't really play games very often, mostly use it for word processing, web browsing, and programming. Ideally, I would like to future proof this system as much as I can. I am thinking of the following setup, please let me know your opinions/if something wrong with the setup/anything. Thanks!

Case: Antec P180
PSU: Antec True Power 2 480 Watt
Motherboard: MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum w/ Zalman CNPS7000B-AlCu
CPU: AMD 64 Venice 3000
Memory: OCZ Premier Dual Channel 4001024PDC-K DDR400 (2x 512)
Video Card: Geforce 6600GT (havn't figured out which one)
Hard Drive: Western Digital Raptor WD740GD
DVD Drive: PLEXTOR Beige SATA DVD Burner Model PX-716SA/SW

I have all the peripherials: speakers/monitor/keyboard/mouse/etc already. I will also run 4-5 older hard drives in addition to the new WD Raptor. Hopefully everything falls within my budget when I start buying in 1-2 months.

sata cd drives are useless and can be a pain when installing windows

that ram is a waste get the corsair VS

good 6600gt's are EVGA, BFG, and Ledtek

raptors have been caught up by modern 7200rpm drives. just look at some benches

I would get a Fortron Blue Storm 500w. Also if you are overclocking get the DFi NF4 Ultra-D. I'd also get the NEC burner.

Thanks. Found these on newegg:
NEC Silver IDE DVD Burner Model ND-3540A
CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400
should do the job quite well.

Why would you choose Fortron Blue Storm over the Antec True Power II ? They both seem to get good reviews.

good changes

they are the same price, and the blue storm is more efficient, has good design, and sleeved calbes.

the only thing the tp2 has that the fortron does not is 2 pci-e connecters.

its really up to you, though. they are both nice

It is a much better PSU Also the Corsair VS does have problems with the DFI board so get some cheap OCZ RAM or something.

nah man, im running corsair VS and the dfi board he wants right now with no problems.
all setup went fine without a tweak. i belive that was an older issue that got fixed

I still think it may be a better bet to go with something else. There are tons of people that have had problems. Until I actually know for sure it has been fixed I would suggest something else.

Since I don't really plan on overclocking, would you guys still choose the DFI board over the MSI one?

No. I would probably suggest getting a cheaper board like the Chaintech VNF4 Ultra. I have no idea how much the MSI costs though.

The DFI would not be worth it if he is not overclocking.

oops, missed that part.

though through my expierience, alsomst everyone that says they wont OC does it once they get more confidence since they actually built their first rig
