This is my response, and I am not being rude or sarcastic.

If your really had to ask that question, with $2500.00 to spend, buy a Dell, Micron, Alienware, or Falcon Norwest PC.

Building a PC is challenging your first time, and could become very costly with one mistake.

There are several building guides if you still want to go this route, and Anandtech has great reviews on all computer products. Just read the reviews on every part you are looking for, and be sure to pick a fast but stable motherboard.

Good luck!

I just got done building my new computer within the past week, it was a really nice experience. But if you're not going to build your own, and you're buying it built, I'd say go with Alienware. They have very high performance computers for gaming. With 2.5k, I say go with at least 1.0 tbird with ddr ram. Get a nice sound system too.

I would not go for a Dell or IBM etc. IMHO you really pay extra for support that you don't need.

Look for a good "recommend" neighbourhood shop that can assemble a custom system for you (with a decent warranty - 1-2yrs).

Now on to the parts. If I were buying in June here is how I would go:

Motherboard: ASUS A7V133 motherboard

CPU: AMD 1200MHz 266MHz bus speed (with a good cooling fan, check some reviews, Super Orb etc)

RAM: 256 MB (CAS2 133MHz SDRAM)

Video Card: ASUS AGP-V7700 GeForce2 GTS Deluxe (comes with video out options) or similar card

Disk Drive: Maxtor or IBM 7200RPM 30GB drive

Sound Card: Sound Blaster Live Value

Speakers: Brand name with sub woofer (Altec Lansing)

Case: Roomy case with good ventilation (I think Anand has reviewed a few from time to time)

CD Burner: recently bought an Acer 10x8x32, but Plextor is highly recommended, but the speed range above is what to look for in addition to brand name.

Well there you go, hope this helps.

I'd go V5 with HSR drivers (just as fast as GF2U with the HSR, FASTER with FSAA + better 2d+3dFSAA). For a sound card, an SB Live! 5.1 (X-Gamer, MP3, etc. the only difference is software bundle) is great. DO NOT OVERCLOCK THE ATHLON! IT WILL BRING YOU NOTHING BUT HEADACHES, AND IT VOIDS YOUR WARRANTY ON MANY SYSTEM COMPONENTS.

By June, a GF3 will be available (too pricey, $600), a Radeon II (unknown price, speed should be awesome along with features though), a 1.4-1.6ghz Athlon (unsure still), ultrafast CDRW/DVD drives, and possibly even affordable DVD-RAM drives (unlikely, but possible).

I'd swap the PC133 RAM for some Crucial DDR 2100 RAM (look thru threads, they DO carry it and it works on all motherboards, it is hidden; but it will be available normally anyway by June easily), as it will give a 10-15% overall system performance increase. Otherwise, everything is pretty good .

I wouldn't get a V5 for HSR features. It isn't even official, and has some serious problems. Drivers should otherwise start showing age when compatibility starts droping (no updates). I'd personally go for a GF2 GTS/Pro instead. More breathing room for the future. Then I'd wait for the NV25, when it comes out, to get the GF3 (NV20).

for $2500, that's a lot of cash, so don't skimp on the monitor. It's what you stare at for hours. Make it a good one.

The x3dfx.com ones are ROCKSOLID STABLE and KICK ASS. I've teste dthem in UT, CS, HL, Q3, Q2, Tribes, Diablo II, and many other games that I own (it works in Giants Kabuto as well and every game I own). Note that it is x3dfx.com NOT 3dfx.com. X3dfx.com is a fansite that makes kickass driver versions since 3dfx is gone; they've been awesome the whole time.
